Overview
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship, offering full costs including a 3-year bursary and tuition fees. Applicants should have a good Upper Second or First Class degree either in engineering or physics. The project concerns research on passive thermal management for modern aircraft and is supported by BAE Systems. The doctoral project will include: investigation of heat, flow and energy aspects and how different materials will affect the overall heat distribution. With the knowledge obtained in the early part of the research, potential solutions for thermal management requirements in current and future air platforms will be derived.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to get involved with the state-of-the-art of heat and fluid flow and material methods, high-performance computing and close collaboration with industry. The Fluid Mechanics and Computational Science Group (www.cranfield.ac.uk/soe/profiles/d_drikakis.jsp) has ongoing collaboration with several academic, research institutions and industries in the UK, Europe and the USA in the area of fluid dynamics, heat transfer and materials.
The application procedure
has as follows: (i) Applicants should send a CV and the names of two referees to Prof. D. Drikakis by email at d.drikakis@cranfield.ac.uk quoting reference FM-Thermal-Management; (ii) the application form (http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/students/applications/apply_pgresearch.pdf) should be completed and posted along with the CV to Prof. D. Drikakis at the address:
Cranfield University, Department of Aerospace Sciences, Cranfield, Bedfordshire MK43 0AL; (iii) the applicants should contact their referees and ask them to send their recommendation letters directly to the above address.
