Ph.D Scholarships in Distributed Algorithms, ETH Zurich

Overview

The distributed computing group is a young research group at the department of information technology and electrical engineering at ETH Zurich. Currently we are ten members. We are interested in a variety of hot topics in the area of distributed computing, such as distributed algorithms, peer-to-peer computing, wireless ad hoc or sensor networks, multi-core systems, or social and mobile networks. In our group we try to apply and unite the approaches and techniques of algorithmic theory and systems implementation. Some members of our group focus on algorithms and analysis, some on systems design and building. All of us work together to build scalable, fault-tolerant, and efficient primitives and applications for the distributed future of computing. Please visit the group web site for more information: www.disco.ethz.ch

We are looking for new members for the theory side of our group with a strong algorithmic background, and a Master’s degree in e.g. Computer Science or Mathematics. A candidate should be attracted by and proficient in areas such as approximation algorithms, complexity theory, distributed algorithms, graph theory, online computation, computational geometry, probabilistic algorithms, combinatorics, or optimization. A new group member can choose and shape a project according to his or her interests and talents within the first months of employment. Successful candidates are expected to work towards a doctoral degree, and participate in the teaching activities of the group.

Application requirements

Applications must include a short letter of motivation as well as a CV. At this point we do not need letters of reference. However, we would like to have a proof of algorithmic interest and talent. This proof can have various forms:

- Maybe you have done an algorithmic Master thesis or term project? (In this case, please attach the PDF.)
- Maybe you graduated from a great school, and have attended lots of courses in algorithms or complexity theory? (Please attach curriculum and grades.)
- Maybe you participated in an Olympiad in Mathematics or Computer Science?
- Maybe you studied one of our algorithmic papers in detail, and know how to improve our results? Or maybe you know how to solve some open problems in our area? We don’t expect a complete paper. Just a short note with anything non-obvious that shows that you might be the right person is enough.
- Maybe something else? Just think along the lines “How can I impress?”

We aim to increase the number of women in scientific positions. Female candidates are therefore encouraged to apply.

Terms of employment for Ph.D. students at ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich is considered to be one of the top academic institutions in Europe. In the last Times Higher Education for Technology ranking, ETH Zurich was number 13 in the world. The completion target for a Ph.D. is 3 years; in our group this target is accomplished quite often, but not always.

Fixed salary

First year of employment CHF 67,000 (currently CHF 1 ≈ USD 1 ≈ EUR 0.75)
Second year of employment CHF 72,000
Third year of employment CHF 77,000

The submission deadline is January 31, 2011. We look forward to receiving your application!
