In keeping with the Federal government's ongoing efforts to ensure that its programs reflect the ethnic diversity of the United States, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs welcomes the opportunity to promote the appreciation and understanding of a multicultural America just as the Fulbright Program promotes the appreciation and understanding of a multicultural world.

Europe: Erasmus Mundus scholarship in Language and Communication Technologies (LCT)

Overview

Prospective students may apply for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship through the Erasmus Mundus Masters in LCT. NB: Please, note that if you have applied simultaneously to more than 3 Erasmus Mundus Masters Programs this year, the European Commission will NOT consider any of your applications. You will be disqualified immediately and without any further notice.

For the programme 2010-2012, it is projected that the LCT Masters is to receive approximately 17 Erasmus Mundus scholarships. The consortium submits a ranked list to the EU for approval, consisting of a main and waiting list. Students will be notified of their status, that is, whether their name has been placed on either list, by the end of March, 2010 for overseas applicants and the middle of July, 2010 for non overseas applicants.

The final decision about the scholarships will be sent to students as soon as we receive it from the EU. If some students withdraw from the main list, the best students from the waiting list will be upgraded to the main list and will be notified immediately.

1. Erasmus Mundus scholarships

In order to give the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses in LCT a strong external projection, a scholarships scheme for graduate students and scholars from the whole world is linked to them. This scholarships scheme addresses highly qualified individuals.

See also the EU Erasmus Mundus web site.

The Erasmus Mundus scholarships are divided into two categories:

Category A(overseas) scholarships can be awarded to masters students selected by EMMC consortia who come from a country other than an EU member state, an EEA-EFTA state (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.

Category B(non-overseas) scholarships can be awarded to any masters students selected by EMMC consortia and who are residents or nationals of any of the 27 EU Member countries (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Rumania), the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) or who are residents or have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 month over the last five years in one of these countries.NB: Special note for applicants from Switzerland, Turkey, Western Balkans region (i.e. Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo under UNSC resolution 1244/99, Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia). Unless otherwise determined due to residency abroad, your application should be submitted under the area "overseas". Your deadline is therefore January 8th, 2010, at which time your application will be given full consideration for a category A overseas scholarship.

Neither Category A nor Category B applicants may exeed the maximal number of simultaneous applications to EM programs: 3

The application for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship is done through the Application Form of the LCT Masters Program, that is, when you apply to the EM LCT program, you are simultaneously applying for the scholarship. The amount of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship for students beginning in 2010 is 24,000 Euros per student per year for overseas students and aproximately 12,000 Euros per student per year for non-overseas students.

2. Consortium Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships will be offered by the consortium and will be allocated to study in each university. They are open to all students (European or Third-country) who have not received other scholarships already. Please, look at Local Information.

The application to a local scholarship, when available, is done through the Application Form of the LCTMasters Program.

3. Erasmus Scholarships

Students from the European Union can apply for a (regular) Erasmus Socrates scholarship for a one year period, even if they have previously received Erasmus Socrates support.

Australia: The Neville Bonner Memorial Scholarship For Honours in Political Science

Overview

Established in the year 2000 by the Federal Government, The Neville Bonner Memorial Scholarship is Australia’s most prestigious scholarship for Indigenous Australians to study Honours in Political Science or related subjects at any Australian university. One Neville Bonner Scholarship is awarded each year.

Field of Study

Political Science may be broadly interpreted to include such subjects as government, political geography, political history, political anthropology and political economics. In addition, the Selection Committee may also consider application from other subject areas consistent with the broad aim of the Scholarship.

Scholarship Value

The Scholarship is equivalent in value to the Australian Postgraduate Award (in the year of award) paid over the period of the Scholarship, which is two consecutive academic semesters of full-time study or pro rata over two years for approved part-time study. In 2010 the APA is projected to be valued at $22,500. The Scholarship also includes up front payments of the HECS amounts relevant to the Honours year of study.

Whilst the receipt of the Scholarship will not preclude the Scholarship holder from receiving some ABSTUDY benefits, all Scholarship funds received by the Scholarship holder will be considered under the personal (student) income test for ABSTUDY purposes. The HECS portion of the Scholarship (paid upfront by the Scholarship Administrator) will not affect ABSTUDY eligibility.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply for the 2010 Neville Bonner Scholarship, candidates must:

•be Indigenous Australians of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and are accepted as such by the Indigenous Australian community in which they live or have lived;
•be Australian citizens;and
•be currently enrolled or have been enrolled in a course of study leading to the award of a Degree of Bachelor with majors relevant to the enrolment in an Honours year in politics or political science or related subjects at a recognised Australian university.

Candidates must also have been offered a place in Honours in 2010 or have good reason to believe they will be offered a place.

Application Process

Candidates must complete the Application Form and submit it with the requested documents (as specified in the Application Form) including their original academic transcript/s and a letter of acceptance into the Honours program.
A letter from an Indigenous community leader or member (or other documentation) that confirms your status as an Indigenous Australian is also required to support your application. Alternatively, it would also be acceptable for one of your referees to confirm your identity as an Indigenous Australian in their report or reference. Candidates also need to write a personal statement of up to two A4 pages in support of their application. This may include a description of your chosen honours topic, your service to the Indigenous community and your future aspirations.
Candidates may also submit a brief resume (up to two A4 pages).

Please read the Additional Information attached to the Application Form, which includes the Scholarship Terms and Conditions and some information on Neville Bonner. (The transcript of a Speech on Neville Bonner by the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson, then Minister for Education, Science and Training, is also available for reference).

Please contact the Scholarship Administrator if you wish to check whether you meet the eligibility criteria for the Scholarship, or if you have any questions.

Application Due Date

Applications and requested documentation (as stated in the Application Form) must be received by the Scholarship Administrator by 30 November 2009. Please do not sumbit additional information that has not been requested, as it will not be considered by the Selection Committee.

Referees

You need two academic referees who can comment on your suitability to undertake study at Honours level. Provide your academic referees with a copy of the Referee Report Form and write their contact details on your Application Form.

You also need one personal referee. This can be someone who is not related to you but who has known you for at least three years, who can write a letter on your personal qualities, extra-curricular activities, other interests and community involvement. Please refer to the Application Form for more details.

Honours admission

Acceptance into the Honours program at the relevant university is a prerequisite for the confirmation of the award of the Scholarship.

An applicant who is not currently a student of the University at which he or she wishes to undertake the Honours program must apply separately and concurrently for admission to that university.

Selection Process

The Selection Committee will consider the academic achievement of the student, the suitability of the applicant for an Honours year of study as assessed by the referees, the student’s aspirations including expressed interest in service to the Indigenous community, and other criteria as included from time to time by the Selection Committee and promulgated in the Application Form.

The award of the Scholarship is conditional on the successful applicant gaining entry into the Honours program.
