Program Aims

The MA in Sustainable Development Program encourages students to critically examine recent development activity in the Southeast Asia region, one which has recently undergone rapid economic growth, and to offer alternatives by learning from local experience and promoting local participation in these activities. In examining the complexities and problems of the development process, an integration of disciplines from the natural sciences and social sciences is encouraged, in order to provide a holistic approach.

We encourage our students to search for alternative policies and for the promotion of sustainable development based on ecological sustainability and security of local livelihoods, through the participation of local people. Research topics focus on resource management, local knowledge, sustainable development, ethnicity, gender, trans-border issues, health and cross-border migration.

We expect the graduates from the Program to have the following attributes:

- A holistic understanding of concepts and methods in both science and social science disciplines, which will enable them to study the development process from many perspectives, drawing upon an understanding of the wider context of social and ecological changes
- A better understanding of the complexity of development, so as to have an ability to analyze the problems and impacts of development in the past and at present
- Have the potential to offer alternatives for sustainable development direction, based on their field-research, and
