2011 USAFP Research Competition

Overview

The meeting will be held in Palm Springs, CA during the week of 3 – 8 April 2011. To apply, all proposals must be submitted in the proper format explained in the "Call for Papers Kit." PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE PREPARING YOUR ABSTRACT AND APPLICATION FORM. Submissions that deviate from the following instructions and guidelines will not be eligible for consideration.

All members of the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians are eligible to submit an abstract for consideration -- this includes medical students who have assisted in developing a research project in conjunction with a mentoring physician and also including retired and reserve physicians who are in the “adjunct member” category. The participant who actually presents the paper should also be clearly noted on the application form along with his/her current duty station.

Judges will eliminate themselves from reviewing any abstract, paper or presentation if they have had active involvement in a project's development, implementation or presentation. Abstract acceptance and rejection letters will be e-mailed in late November 2010.

COMPETITION I: Non-Published/Presented Abstracts

The abstract should describe an original work in one of three categories: (1) clinical investigation, (2) case report, or (3) educational research project. Presentation format options include (a) oral main stage presentation or (b) poster display. The definition for each category is provided in the following pages to help you select the most appropriate category for your work. A plaque will be awarded to the designated on-site presenter scoring highest in each category based upon scientific merit. Additional awards, including vouchers for future USAFP meetings, may be awarded to competition winners.

Abstracts should be factual and should report on completed research. The same data cannot be submitted in two different categories in the same year (i.e., clinical investigation and case report). Materials previously published or presented at the regional level are acceptable for this
Research Competition. Materials previously published or presented at the national/international level must be submitted under Research Competition II. If accepted for an oral presentation, you will be notified to submit a written paper by e-mail no

later than 3 January 2011. No written paper will be requested if accepted for a poster display presentation, but you will be notified of further poster submission requirements/instructions.

COMPETITION II: Previously Published/Presented Abstracts

The abstract should describe an original work that during the past year has either been published or presented at the national or international level but not previously presented at the USAFP meeting. Each applicant should select one of the following categories most appropriate for his/her work: (1) clinical investigation, (2) case report and associated literature review, or (3)
educational research. Abstracts will be judges on merit and on the importance to military family physicians. Abstracts judged to be meritorious will be invited to present at the Annual Meeting. Applicants may indicate a preference for a) oral main stage presentation or b) poster display. Final presentation format is at the discretion of the Clinical Investigations Committee. No awards will be given for posters / presentations in the previously published / presented category.
