PhD Fellowship in Nanomagnetics for MEMS/NEMS/micro power applications

Overview

(Ref. No. SR 05) PhD FellowshipPhD Project Title Nanomagnetics for MEMS/NEMS/micro power applicationsMicrosystems Center, Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, IrelandProject: The rapid growth in the field of wireless sensor networks has highlighted the issue of powering remote sensor nodes. In certain applications where environmental vibrations are present, there is the opportunity to harvest the kinetic energy of these vibrations in to electrical energy and use this to power the remote sensor node. The focus of the PhD project will be on design, modelling and development of vibration based electromagnetic micropower generators using magnetic nanostructure in MEMS/NEMS devices. The project will also include study and development of nano-structured magnetic materials and their static and dynamic characterizations.

Position available: The three year PhD position with fellowship is available as a part of European Union (EU), Network of Excellence (NoE), project called NANOFUNCTION under supervision of Dr. Saibal Roy (email: saibal.roy@tyndall.ie)in the Microsystems center, Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Ireland. The successful applicant will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team, which has a focus on the development of integrated magnetics for different micron scale devices/applications.

The research of this particular position will involve elements of the following;

1. Review of state of the art (publications in journals, conferences and patents)
2. Mechanical and Electrical modelling (Finite element analysis) of micro-generator structures
3. Development of nano-structured magnetic materials (hard and soft magnets)
4. Magnetic characterization and analysis of nano-structured magnetic materials
5. MEMS/NEMS fabrication
6. Electrical characterization of micro/nano scale devices

Requirements:
Essential-
a) Masters (or Bachelors 1H1) degree in Physics / Electrical /Electronic /Microelectronics /Materials Science /Engineering or similar.
b) Proficiency in English, non-native english speakers should provide IELTS/TOEFL score
Preferable- Candidates will be given preference if they have any of the following experiences:
a) Experience in modelling & FEA simulation (ANSYS, ANSOFT, COMSOL etc)
b) Experience in magnetic measurements such as SQUID/VSM, High frequency Permeameter, Network analyzer, Impedance analyzer
c) Experience in Electrical characterization of electromagnetic devices
d) Ability to write original research articles in journals/conference
e) Experience in microelectronic/MEMS/NEMS fabrication processes

Fellowship: ~ 16,000 Euro/annum (tax free) + University fees (~ 6000 Euro/annum)
Start date: September 2010

Candidates should submit a letter outlining their suitability for the position and their curriculum vitae, including publication/s (if any), the names, addresses and email of three referees to careers@tyndall.iequoting the reference number (SR 05).
