Egypt: USAID LOTUS Scholarship Program for Egyptian Citizens

Overview

The LOTUS Scholarship Program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) with the support of the American people. The Program is managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE) through its’ MENA Region Office based in Cairo, Egypt in partnership with a consortium of Egyptian private universities and local organizations.

The Program is offering comprehensive scholarship packages to 100 talented and deserving Egyptian students to obtain undergraduate degrees from Egyptian private universities in fields of studies that are important to Egypt’s current and future development. The LOTUS Scholarship Program aims to accomplish the following:

•To identify and empower young women and men who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and involvement in their communities;
•To give Egyptians students an opportunity to attend private universities that would normally be above their families’ financial means;
•To develop and nurture the recipient’s leadership potentials, skills sets, commitment to community and country so that they are prepared and equipped to become future leaders and advocates for development in their local communities;
•To enhance the recipients’ employability and career options; and
•To create a network of youth nation-wide who are well educated and passionate about Egypt.


LOTUS Scholarship recipients will attend one of five private universities participating in the Program:

•Ahram Canadian University (ACU) – Sixth of October City
•British University in Egypt (BUE) – New Cairo
•Future University in Egypt (FUE) – New Cairo
•Modern Sciences & Arts University (MSA) – Sixth of October City
•Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) - Alexandria

Eligibility criteria for the LOTUS Scholarship Program include:

•Egyptian citizenship (Egyptian citizens who are also U.S. citizens or holders of a U.S. Green Card are not eligible. Egyptian citizens who have any other second nationality may apply.)
•Thanawya Amma Certificate with one of the following statuses as of May 1, 2010:
•Student in third year secondary at an Egyptian public school, experimental school or Azhari school; OR
•Student in first/prep year at an Egyptian public university and would like to start again in the same or a different field of study at a private university. Note: must have graduated from an Egyptian public school, experimental school or Azhari school in 2009; OR
•Graduate of Egyptian public school, experimental school or Azhari school, never enrolled in university, and under the age of 22 (born after July 8, 1988.)
•Minimum score of 85% on Thanaweya Amma exam – both second and third years
•In the case of applicants in their first/prep year at a public university, a minimum score of Good in addition to a minimum score of 85% on Thanaweya Amma exam – both second and third years
•Active involvement in school or university, or community activities including, but not limited to: student council, clubs, sports, community service, etc. Highly competitive applicants will be serving in leadership roles in these activities.
•Demonstrated high financial need

LOTUS Program Scholarship Packages will include the following:

•Full tuition and payment of all university fees for the duration of study (4 – 6 years depending on field of study and English language preparation)
•Housing for the duration of study in secured, single-gender university housing buildings or apartment buildings that are rented and monitored by the universities
•Transportation on university buses to/from university and housing or transportation allowance depending on university placement
•Books and lab fees for coursework for the duration of study
•Monthly living allowance during the period of study
•Annual clothing allowance
•First year settling-in allowance
•Laptop computer
•Academic and social mentoring and counseling to promote integration and success
•Participation in a Leadership in Action Program throughout the duration of study to nurture leadership skills and community responsibility and development
•Career counseling, labor market orientation and workplace activities in preparation for graduation and entering the labor market
•45 of the 100 students will have the opportunity to spend one semester at a university in the United States (preference will be given to high performing students who have not participated in educational and cultural exchanges outside of Egypt)

How to apply

IIE is accepting applications from students who meet the eligibility requirements and who are ready to begin their program of academic studies this coming fall 2010 semester.

The deadline for submitting applications is July 8, 2010. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
