Denmark: PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Electrical og Electronic Engineering

Overview

At the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, Department of Electronic Systems a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Electrical og Electronic Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from August 15, 2010.

Job description

The ASETA project is a project on the use of autonomous vehicles for inspection and treatment of crops. The project employs four PhD/Post Docs, two of which address operations of the autonomous vehicles. The current PhD position focuses on bringing high level tasks such as “photograph this field”, “scan this row of crops”, or “detect the presence of humans in the field” to tasks that can be accomplished by a group of autonomous vehicles (airborne and ground based). It is expected that three airborne and two ground-based vehicles will be operational in ASETA, and therefore the PhD position will be a mixture of theory, simulations, actual tests, and practical demonstration.

To achieve this the PhD is expected to employ a theoretical approach to task generation and allocation, which includes system constraints such as vehicle dynamics, sensor limitations, telemetry delays, etc. The simulation environment that is already in use at the UAV group must be extended to accommodate simulation of ideas and algorithms, and practical experiments with multiple vehicles must be performed. The airborne vehicles are located in Aalborg, while crop test fields and ground-based vehicles are operated by Copenhagen University in Taastrup.

ASETA includes all necessary equipment and lab facilities, and there is access to a local airfield for flight tests. Since all airborne vehicles require manual backup pilot, it will improve the probability of success if the candidate is able to serve as backup pilot. Facilities for training will be provided.

The candidate is expected to be highly motivated and have a background in mathematics, computer science, or electronic engineering, and is expected to possess sufficient prerequisites in all or some of the following fields: control engineering, unmanned aerial systems, real time systems, task generation and allocation, cooperative robotics, Matlab and C programming, RC model flight. The candidates are further expected to do experimental design and tests of unmanned vehicles, and to learn the skill of safely operating a model rotorcraft. Applications will be evaluated by a committee based mostly on the following elements: Curriculum Vitae, motivation letter, PhD plan, grades (Master and Bachelor), publication list (the candidate might include significant papers), recommendation letters. The PhD plan should contain the research topic(s) the candidate wishes to investigate.

ASETA is financed by the Danish Council for Strategic Research, and is in cooperation with Life and Green Support Services at Copenhagen University and Nordic Beet Research.

You can read more about ASETA on www.aseta.dk

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Anders la Cour-Harbo , Department of Electronic Systems, phone: +45 9940 8737 concerning the technical aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

For further information about stipends and salary contact Ms. Helen Kjerstein Kristensen, The Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, phone: +45 9940 7373 .
