Overview
The Blakemore Foundation was established in 1990 by Thomas and Frances Blakemore to encourage the advanced study of Asian languages and to improve the understanding of Asian fine arts in the United States.
Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one year of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia in approved language programs.
To be eligible for a Blakemore Freeman Fellowship, an applicant must:
•Be pursuing an academic, professional or business career that involves the regular use of a modern East or Southeast Asian language
•Have a college undergraduate degree
•Be at or near an advanced level in the language as defined in the grant guidelines (Minimum requirement is 3 years of study of the language at college level or equivalent fluency)
•Able to devote oneself exclusively to full-time language study during the term of the grant. Grants are not made for part-time study or research.
•Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States
FAQ: What is a "professional" career? Law, medicine, journalism, science, engineering, architecture, social work, NGO or government service, etc. are all eligible.
Blakemore Refresher Grants
Blakemore Refresher Grants are made for periods less than one academic year (minimum of two months).
Applicants for Refresher Grants must meet all the eligibility requirements for Blakemore Freeman Fellowships, and be a member of one of the following groups:
•Former Blakemore Freeman Fellows;
•Professors who are teaching in an Asian field at a university or college in the United States and post-doctoral professionals whose degree is in an Asian field;
•Graduates of the regular academic-year programs at the IUC in Yokohama, Japan, the IUP at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, and the ICLP at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan.

The next deadline for applications is December 30, 2010 for study starting between June 2011 and May 2012.
Grants are highly competitive. In 2010, we were able to fund less than 9% of applicants. Application materials are printed from this website.

Eligible Languages & Programs

Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer and Burmese
Consideration will be given to other East or Southeast Asian languages on an individual basis. Grants will not be made for the study of Asian languages not in current use.
The Blakemore Foundation makes grants for study only at specific language programs.
Please refer to the Grant Guidelines for a current list of approved programs.
