Ph.D. fellow in Biomedical Science and Engineering, Aalborg University

Overview

At the Faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology a position as Ph.D. fellow (position no. 562/06-21-10044) is open for appointment from 1.9.2010.

Job description:

Generation of smooth muscle cells from mesenchymal stem cells

The PhD stipend is available within the general study programme “Biomedical Science and Engineering”.

The project builds upon the stem cell group’s expertise on adipose stem cell (ASC) differentiation. Adipose stem cells can be induced to differentiate into a diverse set of cells. Smooth muscle is important for many body functions and damage or change in smooth muscle morphology often cause degraded tissue function. The focus of this project is to investigate the potential of ASC for differentiation, production and engineering of smooth muscle cells. This includes genetic profiling, protein regulation, cell morphology and contractility assays. The clinical application of the project is primarily in regeneration of smooth muscle, particularly fecal incontinence, and the group has several clinical links. The clinical link is important for the project, and the student may pursue different goals in that context.

The PhD project will be supervised by Associate Professor: Jeppe Emmersen

Qualification requirements:

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years.
