Erasmus Mundus (EUROSA) Scholarships

Overview

The EUROSA project (EUROSA - Europe & South Africa Partnership for Human Development) is an Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Partnerships scholarship programme, funded by the European Commission. It is coordinated by the University of Antwerp and itpromotes mobility for students, researchers, academic and administrative staff from South Africa to Europe. It offers mobility grants to 88 South African master students, doctoral researchers and staff to spend a period abroad at one of the partner institutions.

The EUROSA partnership is committed to contribute to the development of redressing past imbalances and to improve the participation rate of historically disadvantaged individuals in higher education. Capacity building and human development, with specific attention to vulnerable groups and excellent academic potential, are at the core of the project. It promotes the intercultural dialogue and international cooperation between the higher education institutions involved. Talented students from different regions and different social economic backgrounds will receive the unique opportunity to spend a period abroad and benefit linguistically, culturally and socially from this intercultural experience in a new learning environment. Researchers and academic staff will be given a wide variety of research, training and teaching opportunities.

The 17 partner institutions are committed to connecting South Africa and Europe through cooperation, exchange of good practices and sharing knowledge and expertise at various levels and in various fields.


What is EMA2?

The Action 2 - Erasmus Mundus Partnerships (EMA2) programme is a higher education cooperation and mobility scheme funded by the European Commission. Its objective is to achieve better understanding and mutual enrichment between the European Union and Third Countries in the field of higher education through promoting the exchange of people, knowledge and skills at the higher education level.

EMA2 aims to:

- contribute to the mutual enrichment of societies by creating open-minded, internationally experienced, skilled and qualified young men and women
- promote mobility for students, researchers and academics from third countries to obtain qualifications and/or experience in the European Union
- contribute to the development of human resources and the international cooperation capacity of higher education institutions in third countries through increased mobility streams between the EU and third countries in accordance with the principles of equal opportunities and non-discrimination


The Eurosa Network

The EUROSA partnership consists of 9 European universities, 8 South African universities and 4 associated partners.

Mobility grants

The EUROSA Network will award 88 grants in total to support South African mobility to Europe at master, PhD and staff level. The duration of the mobility varies from 1 to 34 months according to the level and the type of mobility. Grants include a monthly allowance, health insurance, tuition fees (if applicable) and travel costs from South Africa to Europe.

68 scholarships will be granted to South African students and scholars who are affiliated to one of the partner institutions (= Target Group 1), 20 scholarships will be granted to South African students and scholars from non-partner institutions (= target group 2).

The scholarship includes:

Subsistence allowance

1000 € per month for master students
1500 € per month for PhD students
2500 € per month for academic staff

Health insurance

- Tuition fee (if applicable)
- Maximum amount covered = 3000 €

Travel costs

- Maximum amount covered = 2000 €

· Others including Sport Science, Alternative Energy Resources, Climate Change, Sustainable Development, Nautical Science, …


Who can apply?

The EUROSA project supports mobility for South African master students, PhD students and academic staff. The project awards mobility grants to spend a study or research period at one the 9 partner universities in Europe.

The majority of the grants (2/3) will be awarded to students and staff from the EUROSA partner universities (Target Group 1). A considerable amount of scholarships (1/3) will be granted to master and PhD applicants who are not affiliated to one of the South African partner universities (Target Group 2). Target Group 2 applicants can either be registered at one of the South African universities not included in the EUROSA network or need to have obtained a first degree at a South African higher education institution. South African nationals, with a South African diploma, who are currently working are therefore also eligible to apply for one of the EUROSA master or PhD grants alloted to Target Group 2.

Please note that you are not eligible for a EUROSA grant in case you have studied or worked in Europe for more than 12 months over the past 5 years!


Mobility grants are available for

- South African nationals only
- master students, PhD students and staff studying or working at one of the South African partner institutions (= TARGET GROUP 1)
- master students and PhD students a) registered at one of the South African universities that are not part of the EUROSA network or b) master students and PhD students having obtained a first diploma at a South African higher education institution (= TARGET GROUP 2)
