Taiwan: Joint Announcement of FAPA Travel Scholarships for Young Pharmacists from Developing Countries

Overview

The Pharmaceutical Society of Taiwan (herein after as refer to PST) is the host of 2010 Federation of Asian Pharmaceutical Associations (herein after as refer to FAPA) Congress. With its long-term concern about the pharmacy and pharmaceutical professional development worldwide, PST would like to continue escorting pharmacists or pharmaceutical scientists to travel to Taiwan attending the 2010 FAPA Congress.

Number of the Scholarships Available

PST has allocated a maximum of 3 scholarships for each developing country.

Eligible Developing Countries and their Representative Associations

Bangladesh (Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society), Cambodia (Pharmacist Association of Cambodia), Laos (to be decided), Mongolia (Mongolian Pharmaceutical Association), Nepal (Nepal Pharmaceutical Association), Pakistan (Pakistan Pharmacists Association), Sri Lanka (Pharmaceutical Society of Sri Lanka), and Vietnam (to be decided). Young pharmacists from other developing countries may be eligible when reviewed and approved by the FAPA International Travel Scholarships for Young Pharmacists from Developing Countries Committee (herein after as refer to TS Committee)

What is the value of the Scholarships?

PST will provide airfare (not exceeding 300 USD), 5-day accommodation and free registration to the 2010 FAPA congress.


Who can be nominated?

All pharmacists or pharmaceutical scientists who are under 35 years of age or graduated from pharmacy schools within less than 5 years lives and works or studies in the eligible developing country, and are not able to obtain funds from other sources such as university, employer, government, sponsorship or other grants. Conditions are subject to each different country accordingly and shall be referred to consensus of the TS Committee.

How can nominations be made?

Nominations should be made in writing (preferably by mail) to the TS Committee. The application should be in English. The application should consist of:

A two-page description of the objectives to be achieved and the travel plan. The objectives must clearly state how the applicant will apply the knowledge or experience, gathered during the FAPA Congress, in order to improve the general pharmacy practice, and/or science in the developing country of origin.
Curriculum Vitae (CV) not exceeding two pages. The CV should include current affiliation with FAPA (if any), and a list of previous attendance at FAPA Congresses or other conferences;
A letter of recommendation from the national pharmaceutical association or pharmacy guild which organization could represent pharmacists in your countries;
A recent photograph of the applicant.

When is the deadline?

The completed application, signed by the applicant, must be received by 31st December 2009. All applications will be acknowledged.

What are the selection criteria?

The international nature of the travel plan;
The applicant’s qualifications and background;
The relevance to the objective for the advancement of pharmacy.
How are the Scholarships awarded?
If the application falls within the Travel Scholarships’ objectives, the application will be reviewed by TS Committee, who will make suitable recommendations to the 2010 FAPA Congress Organizing Committee (herein after as refer to OC). The final decision will be made by the OC.

Notification

PST will announce the awardees on 2010 FAPA Congress website in March 2010. The awardees should complete 2010 FAPA Congress registration by June 2010.

Obligation

Successful applicants are required to attend a specific meeting for the Travel Scholarships awardees and submit to PST a brief report (less than two pages) within 30 days after the FAPA Congress. The report must include the description of the applicant’s activities carried out during the congress and an evaluation of the objectives achieved and the occasions where the FAPA Congress was/will be acknowledged.

The report should ideally be submitted electronically. The report may be published in the Taiwan Pharmaceutical Journal/2010 FAPA Congress Newsletter/FAPA Official Website, for publicity purposes, and/or to report to the contributors of FAPA International Travel Scholarship for Young Pharmacists from Developing Countries accounting for the disposition of funds. It should be written with these objectives in mind.

When electronic devices are not available, a typed report may be acceptable.

Note: By accepting an award, an applicant automatically grants PST/FAPA permission to use any materials associated with the application (including the applicant’s photograph) as described above.
