UK: Funded PhD Programme In Pharmacy at University of Reading - School of Pharmacy

Overview

The Reading School of Pharmacy has a strong research base and was recently awarded PhD studentships by BBSRC as part of a 4-year programme. Students will gain experience of several of the constituent disciplines of Pharmacy before embarking on their PhD project and we hope to appoint high calibre students to these positions. The following projects (with names of supervisors) are available from October 2010.

2010 Projects

Synthesis and biological evaluation of non - BBB permeable cannabinoids (Dr Francesca Greco, Dr Ben Whalley, Dr Gary Stephens)

Developing novel drug delivery approaches to treat ocular degenerative disorders (Dr Vitaliy Khutoryanskiy, Dr Che Connon)

Site-specific topical and transdermal drug delivery (Prof Adrian Williams, Dr Wing Man Lau)

Towards novel polymer-based non-viral vectors for gene delivery (Dr Vitaliy Khutoryanskiy, Dr Katrina Bicknell)

Development of new nanomaterials for drug delivery (Prof Helen Osborn, Dr Francesca Greco)


Functional effects of the auxiliary alpha2delta Ca²+ channel subunit (Dr Gary Stephens, Dr Edward Stevens - Industrial Partner Head of Ion Channel Pharmacology, Pain Research, Pfizer Global)

Bioengineering of a cardiac patch (a cell-based therapy for the failing heart) (Dr Che Connon, Dr Sam Boateng)

Asymmetric Synthesis of Unnatural Gamma-Amino Acids (Dr Andre Cobb, Dr Ben Whalley)

The formulation and stability of special paediatric medicines in arthritis (Dr Parastou Donyai, Dr Kenneth Shankland, Dr Nicholas Wilkinson - Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist at the Nuffield Orthapaedic Centre)

Investigating the impact of polymer architectures on membrane interactions(Dr Rebecca Green, Dr Francesca Greco)

Applications for these studentships are encouraged from dynamic and enthusiastic applicants with suitable qualifications (2i or First Class degree or those expecting to graduate with such degrees, UK/EU applicants only). Applicants should send a CV with the names of two academic referees to Catherine Ashford (c.ashford@reading.ac.uk) by the closing date of January 29th 2010 indicating a preference for two projects.
