USA: Excellence in Media Award for Global Health

Overview

The Excellence in Media Award for Global Health is dedicated to drawing attention to health issues that have a global impact. The award honors those who have in the prior year most effectively captured the essence of a major issue in global health and conveyed it to a broad audience.

The Global Health Council recognizes the vital role played by the media in informing the public as well as decision-makers, and seeks through this award to highlight the important contributions to understanding and action made by the winner of the award.


The Council welcomes Media Award submissions in the following four categories:

-Newspaper, Magazine and Major Print Publication (NY Times, the New Yorker, the Economist, TIME Magazine, the London Times)
-Broadcast, TV and "New Media" (video, mixed media, radio and internet-based)
-Photojournalism
-Community Media (community, local, in-country media of all types from, but not limited to, developing countries. This includes newspaper, community radio and Internet-based, and does not include any major news organizations or companies)


Award Background & Criteria

In reviewing the nominees for the Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights, the following criteria will be considered and evaluated:

- Practical work in the field and in difficult circumstances.
- Actual relevance to the linkage of health with human rights.
- Predominant activities in developing countries and with marginalized people.
- Evidence of serious and long-term commitment.
- Potential for award strengthening nominees work.
- Potential for receipt of this award raising the profile of the Mann Award itself.

Funding will enhance visibility and public awareness of issue or project person/organization is addressing.

Potential for attracting additional resources towards resolution of the issue.
The jury bases their decisions solely on what you write on the nomination form. Please feel free to write as much as you like, keeping the total nomination limited to three (3) typed pages.

Selection Criteria

Selection of the awardee is based on the quality of the reporting as well as its wide reach among readers and viewers. The award will be presented in Washington, D.C. at a special awards ceremony during the Global Health Council's 37th annual international conference, June 14-18, 2010.

Deadline: The nomination deadline for the Excellence in Media Award for Global Health is February 1, 2010.
