Overview
Project: The Stem Cell Biology of Childhood Leukemia
University of Oxford - Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, MRC Molecular Haematology Unit
This is a 3-year University of Oxford PhD position supported by the Alexander Thatte Fund and based in the laboratory of Professor Tariq Enver.
The project focuses on understanding the molecular pathogenesis of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia where the fusion oncogene TEL-AML1 contributes an initiating mutation. Using a combination of experimental modeling and detailed analysis of patient derived samples, we will explore the nature and functional impact of the transcriptional networks nucleated by TEL-AML1 in different cellular compartments and stages of the disease. The knowledge of cellular and molecular targets gained, will further provide a basis for informing novel therapeutic approaches.
Value of this studentship
This studentship is fully funded for 3 years, with a tax-free stipend of £17,400 per annum The studentship will be held in conjunction with a De Breyne scholarship at Keble College, and the stipend includes that scholarship. Applications are invited from students of any nationality, however, the studentship only covers UK/EU tuition fees. Therefore, international applicants must be able to cover the difference between UK/EU and international fees. Accommodation will be provided at Keble College during the first year.
The position will especially suit a graduate with a biochemistry or biology degree with molecular and cellular biology content. An interest in cancer and stem cell biology will be important.
The Enver laboratory currently consists of ten postdoctoral scientists, two postdoctoral clinical researchers, two PhD students and one graduate research assistant. The laboratory is part of the MRC Molecular Haematology Unit (MHU). The common research theme of the Unit is the study of the molecular mechanisms that underpin normal haemopoietic differentiation. More information can be obtained about the MRC Unit on the web at http://www.imm.ox.ac.uk/wimm-research/molhaem and the Enver lab at http://www.imm.ox.ac.uk/wimm-research/molhaem/tariq-enver.
