Overview
Bangor University are seeking to recruit a 3-year PhD student to work on a project entitled: "A novel environmentally friendly binder for the natural fibre insulation industry"
Dr P.A. Fowler & Dr. H. Tau
Natural fibre insulation is a reality within the UK with insulation being manufactured and sold with fibres from hemp, cotton, wood and sheep sources being utilised in products. The natural fibres are, in some products, used as the exclusive fibre source whereas in other products utilise synthetically produced fibres as components of the insulation to give the mats strength and rigidity. Currently all forms of fibre insulation utilise synthetic binders in their production, with the exception of Knauf insulation, who have recently released a bio-bound glass fibre product.
The PhD will investigate the use of natural derived binders for use within the natural fibre insulation industry. The work will bench-mark current bio-based resins for their appropriateness in the application and then to investigate the production of a new and novel bio-based resin specifically for the application, ensuring compatibility with the fibre component of the insulation and ensuring longevity of the final product appropriate to the needs of insulation standards.
Value of this scholarship
The prospective applicant should have a minimum of a 1st or good 2:1 in a relevant degree. The scheme waives fees; it includes an annual maintenance grand (stipend) beginning at £13,290, and gives support for consumables, equipment and travel worth £4000/yr. It is part-funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through the European Union's Convergence programme administered by the Welsh Assembly Government.
