Overview
Research within the multi-disciplinary College aims to advance knowledge in key fields, from mathematics and physics to several branches of engineering. Many new and emerging topics are also under investigation such as graphene applications, additive layer manufacturing and renewable energy. 90 per cent of our research was classified as of international quality (RAE2008) with funding provided by Research Councils; charities, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and through industry collaborations.
As part of a top 10 research-intensive university (The Times) our scientists are helping to tackle some of the biggest problems of the 21st century: modelling climate change; sustainable urban water supply; malaria diagnosis; new optical imaging techniques to treat brain disease; and bomb-proof materials.
Up to 15 studentships are available across the following disciplines:
• Computer Science
• Engineering
• Geology
• Mathematics
• Medical Imaging
• Mining and Minerals
• Physics
• Renewable Energy
The awards cover fees at the UK/EU rate. International students can apply, but will need to be able to cover the additional fees (£9,700 for 2010/11) from their own funds or other sources.
Application criteria:
Applicants should possess at least a 2:1 Honours degree, or equivalent, in an appropriate subject and show a clear aptitude and interest in undertaking a research degree.
