Overview
PhD scholarships funded by an ARC Linkage Grant LP0883398 - Managing Risk with Insurance and Superannuation as Individuals Age with industry partners APRA, PwC and World Bank
Up to four PhD scholarships, commencing in 2010 and or in 2011, are available for Australian and international students in Actuarial Studies at the Australian School of Business, to carry out PhD research funded by an ARC Linkage Grant.
Benefits and tenure
The scholarship pays a tax exempt stipend, currently AU$30,000 per annum, including an Australian School of Business top up scholarship. The scholarships are for 3 years full-time, subject to satisfactory progress.
The main areas of research cover modelling and estimating longevity and morbidity trends and risks in a stochastic framework, quantifying financial risks surrounding longevity and morbidity risk, assessments of new products, including reverse mortgages and variable annuities, along with assessing appropriate solvency and risk management requirements, including Basel II and Solvency II.
The project takes on additional significance with the Henry Taxation review addressing Retirement Income and Longevity issues.
Application procedure
Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for a UNSW Local Research Scholarship or UNSW International Research Scholarship, if eligible.
The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence, research experience and/or research potential. Applicants should have completed the equivalent of an Australian 4 year undergraduate degree with First Class or a High Second class Division 1 honours.
Candidates will need to provide a proposal in the area of the ARC Linkage Grant.
Closing date
Scholarships will be considered for Semester 2, 2010 or Semester 1, 2011 entry. The closing date for Semester 2, 2010 is mid April 2010. For Semester 1, 2011 entry closing dates will be the same as UNSW and Australian School of Business scholarship closing dates.
