Overview
A number of PhD studentships are available for both basic and clinically-applied medical research in the area of Infection, Immunity & Inflammation. These awards are offered by the Department of Medical Biochemistry & Immunology, in conjunction with the Infection, Immunity and Inflammation Interdisciplinary Research Group (I3-IRG) at Cardiff School of Medicine.
Research Activities are focused around four core themes, and expressions of interest are welcome from prospective applicants with research interests applicable to these areas. The Core Research Themes are:
• Innate Immunity
• Viral & Microbial Infection
• Cellular & Molecular Immunology
• Cancer Immunology
Successful candidates will join a large and vibrant research-dominated environment with a growing international reputation.

Funding and Eligibility Each studentship will provide UK/EU tuition fees plus a stipend which meets the MRC minimum level (£13,290 for 2009/10).
Academic Criteria: Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. Applications are welcome from candidates interested in both basic and clinically-applied medical research.
Residency: Full awards (which include UK/EU fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals, and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the PhD programme, including for the purposes of full-time education.
EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees-only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of the PhD programme.
