The Kate Edger Educational Charitable Trust for Doctoral Degree Award

Overview

To assist two women graduates to undertake postgraduate study for a doctoral degree at an approved institution in the Auckland area.

Regulations

1. Two Doctoral Degree Awards shall be offered annually. Each award will consist of $12,000 per annum for not more than three years; a total of $36,000.

Closing date: 15 February

2. Applicants for this award must be:
a) women;
b) New Zealand Citizens or Permanent Residents;
c) enrolled or planning to enrol as a doctoral student at the University of Auckland, the Albany
campus of Massey University, AUT University, Manukau Institute of Technology or
Unitec.

3. In making these awards, the Selection Committee shall give consideration to the:
a) applicant’s academic record;
b) applicant’s referees’ reports;
c) applicant’s need for financial assistance;
d) applicant’s aspirations for the future;
e) any other factors they consider relevant.
The committee may interview short-listed applicants.


4. Each applicant for this award must submit her application on the current prescribed application form, together with:
a) a certified copy of her academic record;
b) a certified copy of evidence of status as a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident;
c) a brief outline of the research planned;
d) references from three referees on the prescribed forms in sealed envelopes and signed across the seal. “Certified copy” means a copy of the original, certified as true by an appropriate authority (for
example, University Registrar, Head of Department or Study Supervisor, or Justice of the Peace).

5. This award may not be held concurrently with an award of equal or higher value except with the expressed approval of the Awards Committee.

6. The Doctoral Degree Award shall be paid in annual instalments, the first on presentation of proof of enrolment (for example, the receipted fees invoice or certification from the relevant department) as a doctoral student, and the rest on receipt of satisfactory progress reports from the student’s research supervisor.

7. The successful applicant shall submit a brief progress report at the end of the first two years of tenure of their award. On completion of their degree, the candidate must submit, to the Awards Coordinator, a report (approximately 500 words) outlining the major findings and conclusions of the research, together with a head and shoulders photograph. This report should be suitable for publication on the Kate Edger Educational Charitable Trust website. All publications, reports and presentations (oral or written) must acknowledge the support of the Kate Edger Educational Charitable Trust.
