UK: Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at Keele University

Overview

Keele University - Institute for the Environment, Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics

Limit cycles of thermo-acoustic oscillations in gas turbine combustors

Starting Salary: Grade 6a £27,319 (plus allowance)

Several research positions are available to early-stage and experienced researchers in the Marie Curie Initial Training Network LIMOUSINE, funded by the European Commission under Framework 7. LIMOUSINE is a multi-disciplinary project providing research training in mathematics, structural mechanics, acoustics, fluid mechanics, combustion experimental techniques, and control systems theory. The research objective is to predict the mechanical vibration in a gas turbine engine and the resulting fatigue and time to failure. Active and passive control processes will be developed to allow safe operation of the gas turbine on a variety of fuels and operating conditions. The project is motivated by the need for leaner combustion technologies and reduced emissions.

At the Mathematics Division of Keele University, a PhD position (early-stage researcher) is offered on "Analytical studies of coupled fluid-structure oscillations". The key duties and responsibilities of the position are to develop mathematical models for coupled fluid-structure oscillations in a two-dimensional Rijke tube and to gain insight into combustion instabilities.

Program Duration

The position is for 3 years, with an anticipated starting date of 1March 2010. It will be under the supervision of Dr Maria Heckl (m.a.heckl@maths.keele.ac.uk), supported by her colleagues of the Applied Mathematics group.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must possess an MSc degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, physics or theoretical mechanics as well as a solid background in fluid mechanics and applied mathematics. Analytical and numerical skills as well as experience of the application of mathematics to problems in fluid mechanics are essential.

Applicants must also satisfy the eligibility rules stipulated by the Framework 7 Guidelines of the European Commission. In particular, they must be nationals of any country other than the country of the premises of the host organisation where they will carry out their project. Early-stage researchers must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, starting at the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate.
