Overview
The Faculty of Health, Sport and Science invites applications for a PhD studentship title given above. The three-year studentship is available from June 2010. Candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a first class or upper second class degree in a relevant subject area.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic research group in the Faculty of Health Sport and Science. The Sustainable Environment Research Centre (SERC) has a wide range of equipment to analyse solids, liquids and gases. This includes gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, automatic solid phase extraction (SPE), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma, scanning electron microscopy, solid phase micro extraction (SPME), ion exchange chromatography, and a full range of ‘wet chemistry' techniques. SERC is truly interdisciplinary: group members have expertise in biochemistry, materials, chemistry, physics, mechanical and control engineering, renewable energies, chemical engineering, business and communicating science.
The University of Glamorgan has just invested 27 million pounds in a new laboratory complex and is one of the leading Universities in Europe for Hydrogen research and has also just received a 6.3 million pound grant for hydrogen research. Cardiff and the surrounding valleys represent one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan areas in the UK
Programme of Research: The research involves the synthesis and testing using a hydrogen storage pressure composition isotherm (PCI) apparatus a series of transition metal hydrazide gels (amorphous inorganic polymers). These are new materials, which are believed to store promising amounts of hydrogen using a non-dissociative chemisorption mechanism. The successful candidate will master the synthesis of air sensitive compounds using a brand new glove box equipped with solvent purification system while also learning to run and operate storage and kinetics measurements on a state-of-the-art PCI instrument.
For an informal discussion please contact Prof David Antonelli on 01443 654219 482116 or dantonel@glam.ac.uk.
Funding and Eligibility
Initial Annual Stipend of £13,290 (Tax Free) plus EU/UK tuition fees (or a fee contribution to non UK/EU nationals*, Minimum 2.1 Honours (or above) in a relevant discipline, IELTS score of 7 or equivalent English Language qualification
