UK: Postgraduate Studentships 2010 at Department of Politics, Queen Mary, University of London

Overview

The Department of Politics is offering 3 full-time research studentships and a further shared studentship with the School of Business Management.

Research studentships include payment of tuition fees (home OR overseas) for three years and an annual stipend at the relevant research council rate. Holders of Queen Mary research studentships will receive teaching training and may be required to undertake a few hours of teaching. The research degrees begin in late September 2010.

One of the scholarships is specifically for students wanting to do research in the field of international relations, while the other two can be in any field of Politics (including International Relations). The department has particular strengths in public policy, European politics, Western Balkans and former Yugoslavia, political theory, the comparative politics of developing countries (particularly in Latin America, the Middle East and South East Asia), nationalism , and political conflict.

In addition, the department is also offering a joint scholarship with the School of Business Management.

The joint studentship will be in the area of Politics, Communication and the New Economy. We welcome applications that intend to create new knowledge on the increasingly important overlap between politics and business: potential areas will include political communications and marketing, international political economy, and relations between the state and economy. The successful applicant will be jointly supervised by both departments.

Candidates will normally be expected to have a good first degree and a Masters degree in Politics or a related subject.

How to apply?

To be considered for the studentship applicants will need to provide the following by 12 February 2010:

•A research proposal of 2000 words which should include a hypothesis, key questions to be addressed by your research, methodology and a bibliography.
•You should have a 2:1 or equivalent in your first degree and if your first language is not English you must be able to provide recent evidence that your spoken and written command of the English language is adequate for the programmes for which you have applied. You need to provide evidence of an English language test score or intend to take a test before your studies. Information about English language entry requirements can be found at http://www.qmul.ac.uk/international/languagerequirements/index.html
•Degree Transcripts
•2 academic references
•A full curriculum vitae (CV)
•Supporting statement which states why you want to take the programme

Please refer to the College website for information about entry requirements, (see Arts General) and fees. International students should check the the suitability of their qualifications at the country specific information available on the College website or contact the International Office.

In addition to the admissions application— please also provide a summary of your research proposal. In 750-1000 words, please address the following questions:

•What is the subject of your proposed doctoral dissertation? (500 words max) Please include a brief title.
•Why is Queen Mary the right place for you to undertake this research?
•What ethical issues, if any, are related to your research?
•What research training and professional preparation have you already received?
•What further training and professional preparation will you need to complete the doctorate and begin your career?

Please note that this document is in addition to the admissions application, research proposal, statement of purpose, curriculum vitae or other material mentioned above.

Naturally there will be some repetition across these materials, and we expect that the summary document you provide in order to be considered for a Queen Mary studentship will be in part a distillation of points already made in your more elaborate research proposal.
