UK: University of Oxford & University of York Master's Scholarships

Overview

One-year scholarships to read for a Master's degree at the University of Oxford. Fifteen scholarships are available to scholars wishing to read for one of the one-year taught master's courses within the University of Oxford’s social sciences and humanities divisions (except for the courses listed under management studies). You can check if your course is eligible by consulting the university’s prospectus or visiting the graduate admissions website.

Scholars wishing to apply for Oxford master's awards should obtain information about the relevant degree and its requirements by consulting the University's Graduate Studies Prospectus, also available online in printed form from the local Soros Foundation/Educational Advising Center.

All applicants for this option must complete an application form for graduate study. Application forms are available from the local foundation offices. There is a normally a non-refundable charge of £25 payable when submitting a Master's application to the University of Oxford. However, the sponsors will cover this fee on your behalf on the following conditions:

You must submit your application to the local foundation office by January 12, 2010.
You can then submit your application without payment. Your fee cannot be covered by the sponsors if you apply online.


Twelve-month scholarships to read for an MA in Political Philosophy (The Idea of Toleration) at the University of York
Scholars wishing to apply should obtain further information about the degree course either from the University of York website or from the local Soros foundation/Educational Advising Center ( Please note: applicants for this option do not need to apply directly to York).

Eligibility

•Applicants must be citizens of and resident in one of the following countries: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, FYR Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine or Uzbekistan. Applicants who are temporarily out of the country at the time of application (of the total period of less than 3 consecutive months) may be treated as residents.

•Applicants should be planning to return to their home country at the end of the period of study.

•All applicants must have completed at least four years of university study and have obtained, or expect to obtain, the appropriate degree(s) no later than September 2010..

•Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously studied outside of their home country.
•Applicants must demonstrate the potent ial to become leaders, decision makers, and opinion formers in their home country, as well as a friend to the UK. This requirement will be treated as of considerable importance in the selection process, and applicants should be sure to complete Section 9 of the application form fully and appropriately.

•Applicants should have a proven track record of success or excellence in their professional life distinguishing them from their peers and contemporaries.
•Applicants will be required to have passed an English proficiency test (IELTS preferred) before being offered a Scholarship. The minimum requirement for Option 2 (Oxford) IELTS 7.5 (with minimum 7.0 in each component) or TOEFL - 630 (minimum Test of Written English score - 5) or Computer based TOEFL - 267 (minimum essay writing score - 5) or Internet based TOEFL - 109 or Cambridge Certificate of proficiency in English - B), although some courses, such as those in the area of Oriental Studies, require IELTS 8.0. Please refer to the University of Oxford Graduate Studies Prospectus for further details. The minimum requirement for Option 3 (York) is IELTS 6.5 (TOEFL 580, in the computer-based test (CBT) 237, and iBT 92, Cambridge CPE Grade C).

•Employees, employee's relatives (or former employees who have left employment less than 2 years before) of FCO (including FCO Posts), the British Council, the Educational Advising Centers or other OSI representations in the region, the participating Universities will not be eligible to apply for these awards. In accordance with FCO guidelines, those who in the past three years received UK Government fully funded scholarships or those who are seeking military training are also not eligible for this scholarship.

Application Procedure

Applicants for Option 2 (Oxford master's) should complete the university application form for graduate study and return three copies to the local Soros Foundation/Educational Advising Center, along with the required supporting materials listed below by January 12, 2010.

Applcants for Option 3 (York) should complete the OSI master's scholarship application form and return three copies to the local Soros Foundation/Educational Advising Center, along with the required supporting materials listed below by January 12, 2010.

Supporting Materials

Three copies of the following documents should be included:

•Official Diploma

•Official academic transcript with grades (original and two copies)

•Certified English translation of academic transcript

•Summary of Diploma dissertation
If your degree course does/did not require a dissertation, please indicate this in section 22 of the application form. We expect applicants to include a summary even if the dissertation has not yet been submitted.

•TOEFL or IELTS certificate (IELTS preferred)

Applicants who already have a valid certificate should send copies with the application. Local OSI/Soros Foundation/Educational Advising Centers will arrange tests for short-listed candidates after the interviews in April, if applicants have not already successfully taken a test in the 2 years prior to the interview. For Option Three, test certificates must be sent to the Graduate Admissions Office at Oxford University. Depending on the course applied for; applicants may be disqualified if this information is not submitted by the application deadline; however in some cases the test results may be submitted at a later date. Applicants should arrange:

•Two confidential references. Applicants should ask the referees named on their application form to complete a copy of the confidential reference form and return it to the local OSI/Soros Foundation office/Educational Advising Center by January 12, 2010.

All application documents must be single-sided. Do not staple or fasten (other than with paper clips).

Deadline and Timetable

The OSI Scholarship Application Forms must be submitted to the local Soros Foundation/Educational Advising Center before January 12, 2010.

Interviews of short-listed applicants will be held in April 2010, and final decisions on the award of scholarships will normally be made in June.
