USA: Smith Richardson Foundation Fellowships - Yale University

Overview

The Smith Richardson Foundation Fellowships provide support to graduate students for summer and year-long archival research in the fields of international, diplomatic, political, and military history, and strategic studies, and for summer language study.

Eligibility

Graduate students undertaking initial archival research or enrolling in a summer language course, and advanced graduate students in the relevant fields undertaking an extended period of dissertation research, are eligible to apply for support. Award recipients may be requested, as a condition of support, to contribute to ISS’s Occasional paper series.

Value of this fellowship

ISS will give priority to applicants who have demonstrated a scholarly and programmatic involvement in ISS's activities. Past Smith Richardson Fellowship recipients are eligible to apply for further support. The number and value of grants awarded will depend upon the size of the applicant pool. Grants will normally not exceed $5,000 for summer support and $10,000 for research during the academic year.

All applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to other Yale centers and departments, and externally, for support. Graduate students should begin by consulting the Student Grants database, the McDougal Center, and their adviser.ISS will not make awards to applicants who fail to apply for other Yale sources of funding for which they are eligible. It will give preference to applicants who apply for external sources of funding.

Deadline

All materials must be submitted no later than 20 March 2010. Announcement of awards from the fund will normally be made within three weeks of this deadline.

Application Procedure

Please download this application form and submit it as a cover sheet, with the materials requested on the form, to Kathleen Murphy, ISS, 31 Hillhouse Avenue, Room #209, New Haven, CT 06511. You may also e-mail your materials to Ms. Murphy.
