Overview
The ALA Scholarships application round for the 2011 intake of scholars opened on 10 March 2010. The application period closes on 30 June 2010.
The round has opened a little earlier this year in an effort to give applicants more time to apply for an offer of place and universities more time to assess the applications for admission.
About ALA Scholarships http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/ala.cfm
The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) aim to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific, while addressing priority development issues of the region.
The ALA program comprises ALA Scholarships and ALA Fellowships.
These awards are for leaders or those who have potential for leadership roles that can influence social and economic reform, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region.
ALA Scholarships are for study at Masters or Doctorate level in an Australian university.
Study programs must relate to a priority development area: disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development, water and sanitation.
ALA scholars also undertake a Leadership Development Program in Australia.
As ALA Scholarships are an investment in the future of the Asia-Pacific region, ALA scholars are required to return to their home country or the region for two years after they have completed their studies in Australia.
Selection for ALA Scholarships is competitive, based on leadership qualities, academic excellence and potential impact on return home.
To be eligible to apply, scholars must meet the criteria available at http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/ala.cfm
You may like to consider those who have expressed interest on projects overseas (remembering that the applicant must be residing in a country outside of Australia and applying from off-shore, so cannot be a current student).
More information from Di Roberts,
Program Manager, ALA Scholarships
As you may be aware, applicants for ALA Scholarships need to provide an Unconditional Letter of Offer from their University of choice, and documentary evidence of an IELTS or TOEFL result, taken within the previous two years, according to AusAID requirements.
Applicants need to meet your University's requirements AND AusAID's requirements; meeting one doesn't cancel out the other.
Hopefully, applicants applying to your University for a place, will use AusAID's letter of introduction, so that the assessor will be mindful of the 30 June deadline.
ALA Scholarships are now open to applicants from Burma (Myanmar) and Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Further information (including the Handbook) can be found at:
Another thing to note is that the ALA Scholarships program now come under the umbrella of the Australia Awards- an initiative announced by the Prime Minister in November 2009.
The Australia Awards brings the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) scholarships together under the Australia Awards program.

On behalf of the ALA Scholarships team, at this time consisting of Jodie Lindsay, Kathy Catena, Ha Platt and me, we look forward to working with you to achieve another successful intake of scholars under Australia's aid program in 2011.
As per usual, please send any queries to the ALA mailbox: ala@ausaid.gov.au This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view itand we will make every effort to answer them within a couple of days.
(If you currently have a query in with us, I apologise for the delay in responding - preparations for opening the application round and for the Leadership Development Program Conference being held here from Monday next week, have been occupying our resources!)
Kind regards
