Overview
The Legislative Fellows Program (LFP) for 2010 Program year will allow 10 Georgian young professionals to travel to the United States and gain practical experience in the Legislative Institutions.
LFP program is fully sponsored by the U.S. State Department, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS (http://www.americancouncils.org/aboutOrg.php) with support from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL, www.ncsl.org).
We invite to take part in the competition in Georgia all interested candidates who:
- Are citizens and residents of Georgia; v Are 25-35 years of age; v Are university graduates (Bachelor's degree or higher);
- Are proficient in English as demonstrated by TOEFL scores over 550 (paper test) or 213 (computerized test); v Have legislative experience and knowledge as it relates to the applicant's home country;
- Have relevant experience in and commitment to a career in the public sector;
- Have leadership and collaborative skills.

Georgian semifinalists will be selected by a committee in Washington, DC, and then interviews will be conducted at the American Councils office in Tbilisi. Fellows will attend orientation sessions prior to departing for the United States during which they will apply for their U.S. visas, learn about American culture, and review program requirements. Upon arrival in the United States, they will participate in a three-day intensive introduction to the U.S. political process in Denver, CO. Fellows will then begin their fellowships across the United States in state legislatures and city halls, immersing themselves in the daily operations of state governance, government oversight, and citizen participation.
At the end of the program, Fellows will be given a unique opportunity to meet LFP fellows from Bahrain, Bhutan, Brazil, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Africa, Singapore, Taiwan and learn about their legislative systems during two day wrap-up conference organized in Washington, DC.
