Overview
The Flemish Institute for Technological Research, as a leading research centre in sustainable process technology, is looking for candidates interested in a post doc position. VITO will help those candidates in preparing a Marie Curie proposal (deadline 17 August 2010).
We are willing to host the post doc via a Marie Curie fellowship (IEF and IIF) the call for which is now open (more information on http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/dc/index.cfm?fuseaction=UserSite.FP7DetailsCallPage&call_id=242

Candidates can contact Heleen De Wever for further information at heleen.dewever@vito.be
Valorization of organic waste streams through fermentation processes is a possible topic.
Program Description
Current practical experience with fermentation for the production of specific bio-based chemicals relies on batch treatment, the use of pure bacterial cultures and single substrates and separate recovery of the products. In contrast, this proposal for postdoctoral research targets continuous fermentation of complex organic waste by mixed cultures. The aim will be to integrate fermentation and separation processes to achieve better yields and productivities. Fermentative reactions can lead to the formation of potentially inhibitory products. Their continuous removal through in-situ product recovery is thus essential to obtain maximal productivities. Depending on the type of product to be removed, a different type of separation technology shall be applied. The research activities will consist of selecting appropriate separation technologies, designing integrated systems for the continuous production of soluble fermentation products and testing these systems towards improved productivities of target end products from organic waste streams. We intend to focus initially on the removal of alcohols or volatile fatty acids through membrane separation processes.
