UK: PhD Studentship in Computer Vision at Queen Mary, University of London

Overview

Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship to undertake research in the area of deformable and articulated motion analysis, starting September 2010. The PhD project aims to extract 3D models of deformable and articulated objects purely from video sequences . The successful candidate will develop models and algorithms for registration, tracking and 3D reconstruction of deformable and articulated objects from monocular video sequences.

This position, under the supervision of Dr. Lourdes Agapito (http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~lourdes), is associated with the HUMANIS project (HUman Motion Analysis from Image Sequences) funded by the European Research Council within the Starting Independent Researcher Grant scheme. Building on our recent work on non-rigid structure from motion, this project seeks to use the exciting scenario of human motion analysis to develop computer vision algorithms able to recover detailed 3D models of humans or other non-rigid objects in an automated way, purely from image sequences.

The successful candidate will be based at the Queen Mary Vision Laboratory (http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/research/vision/) in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London. The Queen Mary Vision Laboratory is one of the leading computer vision research laboratories. Dr Agapito's group specialises in non-rigid structure from motion, 3D reconstruction and tracking of deformable and articulated objects, human motion analysis and motion segmentation.

Eligible candidates

The candidates should have a first or upper second honours degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field, and be able to demonstrate strong mathematical and analytical skills. Good programming skills are required, preferably with Matlab and C++. Research experience in image processing, computer vision, or machine learning is desirable.

Amount awarded

The studentship will cover student fees and a tax-free stipend starting at £15,590 per annum and is available to candidates of all nationalities.

Informal enquiries can be made by email to Dr. Lourdes Agapito: lourdes at eecs.qmul.ac.uk .

How to apply

An application form can be obtained at http://www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/

To apply please email the following documents to Dr. Lourdes Agapito (lourdes at eecs.qmul.ac.uk): a completed application form, a CV listing all publications, your representative publications in PDF format, 3 reference letters, a research statement and other relevant documents as requested (see www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/). These documents must also be submitted online following the instructions given in the link.

The closing date for the applications is 16th June 2010.

Interviews are expected to take place during w/c 21st June2010.
