UK: John Henry Garner Scholarships at University of Leeds

Overview

The John Henry Garner Scholarship was established in 1974. The fund was bequeathed by John Henry Garner, a graduate of the University of Leeds. It was his wish that the fund be used to finance postgraduate research on matters relating to chemical and biological surveys of rivers and streams, pollution prevention and the purification of sewage and trade effluents in the geographical area known as the West Riding of Yorkshire, prior to the boundary changes, which became effective on 1 April 1974.

How are they awarded?

To be considered you should make a formal application for PhD study, stating clearly that you wish to be considered for this scholarship. Before submitting your application you may wish to discuss proposed research projects with individual academic staff members in the Faculty. Applications will be considered on academic merit.

- These awards are only available to nationals from the UK and EU and are not open to applicants who are liable to pay academic fees at the international fee rate;
- Applicants must hold a First Degree at undergraduate level equivalent to at least a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree. Applicants should either have graduated with the appropriate First Degree or be in their final year of study;
- Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University’s English Language requirements. Some Schools require a standard of English higher than the University minimum;
- These awards are not open to individuals who have already been awarded a Doctoral degree.


Amount awarded

The award will cover academic fees at the UK rate and a maintenance grant of £10,000 per annum. There are no additional allowances for travel or research costs. The award will be made for one year in the first instance and renewable for a further period of up to two years, subject to satisfactory academic progress. Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this Scholarship.

How many are available?

One scholarship is available for session 2010/11 and must be taken up by 1 October 2010.
