Overview
Each year up to 2 awards are offered to UK students for PhD study at accredited US institutions in science or technology field, at any US university. Sponsored by the US Department of State, the Science and Technology Awards have been designed to be among the most prestigious international scholarships worldwide. Successful candidates will work with the Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education (IIE) to find the right department for them.
Award Benefits
The award covers full tuition and associated fees for up to three years. Additional benefits include: a monthly stipend for up to 36 months; book, equipment, research and professional conference allowances; J-1 visa sponsorship for up to five years; round-trip airfare from home city to the host institution in the US (on a US airline); health and accident coverage; and specially tailored enrichment activities.
Selection Criteria
Minimum eligibility for this award category:
- UK citizen (resident anywhere)
- hold or expect to obtain a minimum 2:1 honours undergraduate degree or the equivalent prior to your anticipated enrolment with a US university
Eligible fields include: aeronautics and astronomic/aeronautical engineering, astronomy/planetary sciences, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer sciences/engineering, energy, engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum), environmental science/engineering, geology/earth and atmospheric sciences, information sciences/engineering, materials science/engineering, mathematics, neuroscience/brain and cognitive sciences, oceanography, and physics.
Preference will be given to those who do not have extensive, recent experience in the US (6 months) and to those with a bachelor’s degree in the same or a related field as the intended PhD study.

Following in-country competition, nominees' applications will be forwarded to a panel of top-level US academic leaders for additional discipline merit review. Final selection will then made by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB).
In making these awards the Commission is looking not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to your home country upon returning.

Applications are made online but must be printed and signed, along with several supplemental forms, and posted to the Fulbright Commission. You will need to register to the Fulbright Commission’s website. You will then be directed to and asked to register with the online application site. You will be able to log in and out of your application account and will not be required to complete the application in one sitting.
The online application is facilitated by IIE and is used by Fulbright Commissions worldwide. Each Commission sets its own policies and procedures and country-specific instructions for using the online application system. When making an application for a US-UK Fulbright Science and Technology PhD Award it is imperative you follow the application instructions.
Successful applicants will be invited for interviews at the Fulbright Commission on the date(s) listed below. Interviews will only be held on the indicated date(s) only and may not be rescheduled.
