Denmark: Postdoc position in Microbial Metagenomics at University of Copenhagen

Overview

Soil is by far the most species-rich of the Earth’s many microbial habitats with hundreds of thousands of different microbial species in a few grams. Soil will continue to be an important source of beneficial microorganisms for biotechnological exploitation, with a multitude of novel pharmaceuticals, antibiotics and enzymes from soil microorganisms awaiting discovery. In this project we will use high throughput sequencing to explore the bacterial biodiversity and composition in various natural environments to a hitherto unseen level.

The aim of this project is to further develop and unleash the modern microbial metagenomics tools to uncover a range of novel enzymatic activities in a natural environment.

The position is for 1,5 year and funded through a recently established “NOVENIA center” funded by the Danish Strategic Research Council. The project will be carried out at Section for Microbiology, Dept. of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Eligible candidates

We are looking for a skilled and competent molecular biologist with experience in DNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of metagenomic data.
• PhD in microbiology, molecular biology or a similar degree
• Documented experience with implementation of molecular methods in studies of microbial ecology (i.e. bacterial genetics, quantitative PCR, molecular cloning)
• Documented experience with independent experimental laboratory work involving natural bacterial communities
• Documented experience with bioinformatic analysis of large metagenomic data sets (i.e. SSU rDNA analyses, metabolism-specific gene analyses, comparative analyses)
• Experience with Unix-based operating systems
• Advanced knowledge of the Perl programming language and web-based bioinformatics tools
• Fluent in English
• You will be able to cooperate well with your colleagues and enjoy both teamwork and cross-functional cooperation.

For further information, contact Professor Søren J. Sørensen sjs@bio.ku.dk.

Application

The application must contain:

- Curriculum vitae
- List of publications
- Motivation for applying
- Transcript of university examinations (in English)
- Contact details of 2 persons for references An assessment committee will evaluate the applications.

The applicant will be notified of the composition of the committee. Each applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns her/him. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant. In addition experience with the effects of climate change on microbial processes in soil will be an advantage.

Terms of appointment and payment

in accordance to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). For post docs salary is based on seniority and is currently between 31,400 DKK and 33,000 DKK plus pension contribution and possibility to negotiate further supplement.
