CKS is seeking an individual for the position of:

Visiting Scholar

Specializing in Southeast Asian Studies

For a period of 3 months from August 1 – October 30, 2010 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The Junior Faculty Training Program (JFTP) seeks to enhance the knowledge base and academic skills of junior Cambodian academics and researchers in the field of humanities and social sciences. This will be achieved through intensive workshops and seminars.

The Visiting Scholar will be responsible for holding eight weeks of academic seminars and workshops focusing on research design and methodology in the context of Southeast Asian studies to junior faculty staff from Cambodian Universities. In addition, they will spend one month assisting in the development of a Southeast Asian studies curriculum to be designed for 4th year undergraduates. The position involves coordination with the Project Director, an Academic Committee, and participating groups of early-career Cambodian academics.


Assisted by the Project Director and in consultation with members of the Academic Committee, the Visiting Scholar will be responsible for the academic content of the program for a period of 3 months, including:

• Designing and leading the activities of the program, including seminars and workshops focusing on research design and methodology.
• Selection of relevant course texts and bibliography.
• Assisting in the development of a curriculum for Southeast Asian Studies at the undergraduate level.

Person specification

Essential:

• An earned doctorate from an internationally accredited university, in a relevant humanities or social science discipline.
• Recognized academic reputation in the field of Southeast Asian studies, Cambodian studies or mainland Southeast Asia. Publication record.
• Experience in curriculum design and developing teaching projects.
• Ability to teach research methods and general academic skills.
• At least five years experience of university level teaching.
• Excellent inter-personal skills, including cross-cultural communication skills.

Desirable

• Experience of training Cambodian or Southeast Asian academics at an early stage of their careers.
• Familiarity with the Cambodian higher education system.
• Experience of working in Cambodia and Southeast Asia.
• Khmer Language skills.

Salary: $US 3,000 per month plus travel expenses.
