Overview
Through the “Geisteswissenschaften International” award, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the collecting society VG Wort, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels), and the Federal Foreign Office of Germany commend innovative humanities and social science work in the German language. Scientific quality is at the core of the selection procedure.
The prize money totaling 600,000 euros per year finances the translation of this work into English. The award amount is determined by each individual case and the actual translation costs. An independent selection committee of academics, expert journalists, and scientific publishers select the work to be funded.
Every year in January and in July, German publishers can submit publications from the fields of humanities and social sciences online at http://www.geisteswissenschaften-international.de. The goal of this translation funding is to contribute to the worldwide dissemination of humanities research from Germany and, at the same time, to preserve German as a scientific language and the primary publication language for works from the humanities.
