Overview
Monbukagakusho (MEXT), The Government of Japan, will award the Scholarship for Research Students to 2 Icelandic citizens for graduate level studies in Japan. Each scholarship will be available from either April or October of 2011. Those leaving in April will hold their award for two years, whilst those departing in October will hold theirs for 18 months.
Amount Awarded
The Government of Japan will provide a round-trip airfare, tuition and a monthly stipend. Under the fiscal 2010 budget, the monthly stipend will be 152,000 yen. (The amount of money is subject to change.)
Eligible Candidates
Those who are born on or after April 2, 1976 and have a bachelor’s degree when the benefit period starts are eligible for the MEXT Scholarship for Research Student. Applicants must apply for a study field that they have specialized in or a related field.
Fields such as traditional performing arts and culture that are usually not taught at Japanese universities are excluded, unless you already have entrance permission from the university. For further information, kindly read the guideline.
Scholarship applicants must be in good mental and physical health, as well as being willing to learn Japanese language. Also they are required to depart for and arrive in Japan between 1st and 7th of April 2011 or within two weeks of the date set by the receiving university for the beginning of the semester.
The first selection will be carried out by the Embassy of Japan in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture in Iceland. 2 nominees’ applications will subsequently be forwarded to MEXT in Japan where the final selection will be made.

Completed forms must be returned to the Embassy no later than 25 June 2010.
An incomplete or late application will disadvantage applicants.
All applicants who are subsequently short-listed will have an interview, then English and Japanese language examinations, at the Embassy of Japan in July 2010.
