UK: Early Stage Researcher in Forest management and global biogeochemistry

Overview

To develop forest management algorithms for global forested regions, under the secondary supervision of (including a placement at) Microsoft Research Ltd, UK, and in close collaboration with world leading ecosystem experts at the University of Leeds

Program Description

The Met Office Hadley Centre is the Climate Research department within the UK Met Office. It performs state of the art climate monitoring and modelling, including modelling of the biogeochemical components of the Earth System. Extensive use is made of coupled climate modelling (e.g. with our HadGEM2 Earth System model) and off-line land surface modelling (JULES).

Under GreenCycles II, the Met Office Hadley Centre will participate in the work package to improve constraints on terrestrial ecosystem processes through targeted model evaluation. Extensive use will be made of the new observational datasets derived elsewhere in GCII.

This project will develop forest management algorithms for global forested regions, under the secondary supervision of (including a placement at) Microsoft Research Ltd, UK, and in close collaboration with world leading ecosystem experts at the University of Leeds. For the purposes of qualifying for a PHD, this ESR will be registered as a student at the University of Leeds (but note the position will be based primarily at the Met Office in Exeter).

The model development will be within the well-established JULES global ecosystem model. Available data will be synthesised and the consequences of forest management and interactions with other factors such as climate changes will be investigated.
