USA: Postdoctoral Position in Atomic Physics at Physics Department, Williams College

Overview

The College is pleased to announce an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship under the guidance of Professor Tiku Majumder. This is a full-time, one-year term position beginning July 1, 2010 with the possibility of renewal for up to three years. Experiments in this laboratory focus on high-precision diode laser spectroscopy of heavy atoms with the goal of testing atomic theory and exploring fundamental symmetry violation (visit http://people.williams.edu/pmajumde for further details).

A Doctorate in Physics or a related field and a strong background in experimental physics is essential. Experience in relevant areas of laser and atomic physics techniques is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills, and the ability work both independently and as part of a team are also important. The position offers the additional opportunity for the applicant to become involved in the educational life of the Williams College Physics Department through interactions with undergraduate students in honors research projects, the teaching laboratory, or during the month-long January teaching term.

Williams College is a coeducational liberal arts institution located in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts with easy access to the culturally rich cities of Albany, Boston, and New York City. The College is committed to building and supporting a diverse population of approximately 2000 students. The physics department at Williams graduates 15-20 majors per year, with more than half enrolling in Ph.D. programs in physics and related fields. The department features five experimental and four theoretical physicists, all with active research programs (see www.williams.edu/Physics).
