Overview
The Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC) is a research institute of the Universiteit van Amsterdam, in which researchers studying linguistics in its broadest sense collaborate.
The ACLC focuses on the description and explanation of variation in language and language use. A key feature of the ACLC approach is that linguistic phenomena are studied from the widest possible variety of perspectives, both descriptive and theoretical, in order to ensure that the findings are not accidental, but are truly representative of the basic parameters that govern the organization of natural languages.
Applications are invited for up to 2 PhD fellowships at the ACLC, tenable from September 1, 2011, for a period of up to 4 years. These fellowships are in part funded by the Humanities Incentives Board in collaboration with the Humanities Division of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. Applications should include a description of the proposed research project (max. 2500 words), a full academic CV, a list of MA courses and grades, your MA thesis (or another piece of written work if you have not yet finished your thesis), a letter of motivation, and the names of two referees with contact information.
Eligible Candidates
Applicants must have a completed MA degree in linguistics (or equivalent), obtained no longer than five years before the start date of the fellowship.
All proposals have to fit squarely within ACLC's research programme The Language Blueprint and preferably also within the research focus area Learnability. Projects focusing furthermore on foreign languages taught at the University of Amsterdam are also specifically invited.
More information about the research programmes and about the submission and selection procedure can be found on www.hum.uva.nl/aclc under Vacancies. There you can also find the detailed guidelines for the application format to be used.

Applications should be submitted as PDF files via email before January 24th, 2011 (January 23rd 23:59 at the latest), to: aclc-fgw@uva.nl.
Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
