Postdoc Life Course Sociology at University of Groningen - Department of Sociology

Overview

Within the Department of Sociology at the University of Groningen there is a postdoctoral position available for the duration of 3 years. The postdoc will play a key role in the research line of Melinda Mills, focusing on life course research specifically in the area of fertility and family research. This postdoctoral project is part of a larger VIDI project (financed by the Dutch Science Foundation) of Mills entitled 'Is Fertility in the Genes? Unravelling Gene-Environment Interaction and Fertility Postponement'. Central questions include: What measures of genetic and socio-environmental determinants and their interactions can be developed to capture their impact on age at first birth and number of children? How much of the variance or explanation is attributed to genetic versus socio-environmental sources?

The postdoc position is embedded in the research and graduate school ICS (Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology), a nation-wide research network between the Universities of Groningen, Utrecht and Nijmegen.

Tasks:

- engage in academic research within the abovementioned research line and VIDI project and publish internationally over this topic
- co-supervise PhD candidates and master students within the abovementioned research line
- teach within the department of Sociology (max. 20% by a full-time position)
- develop new research projects and proposals
- actively participate in research line and departmental meetings and research activities within the ICS research school.


Requirements

- a completed PhD in Sociology, Demography, Statistics, or associated disciplines
- experience with large-scale quantitative data analysis and advanced statistical techniques
- affinity with one or more of the topics of fertility, the life course, biosociology/demography and/or gene and environment interaction research
- some (basic) experience in teaching or supervision
- should possess: theoretical and conceptual thinking, creativity, flexibility, self-motivation, independent worker and perseverance
- publications in international refereed journals.

Conditions of employment

The salary amounts from appr. € 3,195 gross per month to a maximum of € 4,374 gross per month, both before taxes and for a full time employment.
