Overview
The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program is an opportunity for young teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States while strengthening the instruction of foreign language at U.S. colleges and universities. The FLTA is an integral part of the Jordanian Fulbright Visiting Student Program.
■ Program Description:
The FLTA Program is a nine-month, non-degree program aimed at strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities, and some high schools, while providing current or future teachers of English with the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency, and extend their knowledge of U.S. society and culture. FLTA Fellows also interact with their host communities in conversation groups, extracurricular activities, and community outreach projects. FLTA Fellows must return to their home countries upon completion of the program. FLTA Fellows may assist in or teach up to two language classes and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in U.S. Studies. The remaining coursework should relate to their careers in English language teaching. FLTA Fellows will also be expected to facilitate cultural events, language clubs, and language tables. FLTA Fellows will be required to attend an orientation in the U.S. during the summer of 2012 before arriving at their U.S. host institutions in August 2012. FLTA Fellows will also be required to attend a mid-year enrichment workshop that will be hosted by the Department of State's Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau (ECA) in the U.S. to share and discuss foreign language teaching best practices and their current teaching experiences with other FLTA Fellows.

-- Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English, and at minimum must possess the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor's degree by 28 April 2011 with all official university transcripts available. A Master's degree is highly desirable at many U.S. institutions.
-- Fluency in English is mandatory, demonstrated by a score of no less than 79-80 (internet based TOEFL - IBT) or 5.5 (overall score international English language testing system - IELTS). All nominees should take the TOEFL immediately to allow sufficient time to receive the official score reports.
Note: If you do not have a valid TOEFL Score to submit with your application and wish to sit for this test, please contact the AMIDEAST office (Tel. No. 581-0930) immediately to register for the next TOEFL exam, contact AMIDEAST to sit for the Institutional TOEFL Program (ITP) and submit this score with your application. No application will be accepted without a valid official TOEFL score (on the iBT exam formats) or an ITP score in the interim.
-- Applicants must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity, and professionalism.
-- Applicants must be residing in Jordan throughout the nomination and selection process.
-- Applicants must hold the Jordanian Citizenship (Nationality), a valid Jordanian Passport and must have a permanent residence status in Jordan at the time of application.
-- Candidates for the FLTA applying for or holding permanent residence in the United States are not eligible. Persons who are citizens of both Jordan and the United States are also not eligible.
-- Applicants must be at least 21 years old and no more than 29 years old at the time of application.
-- FLTA Fellows are required to return to Jordan upon completion of the nine-month program. The Binational Fulbright Commission in Jordan and the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York will not support any extension requests for fellows.
-- The FLTA program does not support dependents or family members. By extension of this policy, pregnant candidates may not participate in the program if the birth is due during the program period.
-- Sound physical and mental health: Those selected for a Fulbright grant are required to submit a Medical History and Examination Report before their grants can be finalized.
-- Applicants must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity and professionalism. Applicants should demonstrate leadership skills, an ability to motivate students to learn, and an interest in teaching Arabic language and culture to U.S. students. Potential candidates should have a desire to meet people and become a part of the host U.S. community by participating in community events and campus activities. FLTA Fellows should also be creative and self-reliant team players, who are able to maintain excellent relationships with U.S. faculty, staff and students.
-- Applicants should be representative and responsible citizens who can contribute to a full and fair picture of the culture of their own countries and thereby contribute to understanding between the people of the United States and Jordan. One of the goals of the Program is to place FLTA Fellows in all 50 states and at diverse institutions. Fellows must be flexible with placements at smaller or more ethnically-diverse academic institutions.
--They should also demonstrate the cross-cultural sensitivity and flexibility needed to adjust successfully to life in the United States. Potential applicants must be outgoing and dynamic individuals with a great sense of humor.
-- Preference may be given to those applicants with little or no previous experience living or studying in the United States. Participants must be flexible with placements at smaller or more ethnically diverse U.S. academic institutions in order to meet the goal of the FLTA Program to place participants in all 50 States and at diverse institutions.
-- Any applicant who is seeking a U.S. degree should not apply to the FLTA Program.
-- Applicants will be considered without regard to race, religion, gender and/or physical impairment.

-- Each candidate will be required to submit an on-line application via the on-line management system administered by IIE. Once the applications have been submitted, the Binational Fulbright Commission will review and nominate candidates. Approved applications will then be forwarded electronically to both, the IIE offices in New York and to the Department of State in Washington, D.C. for review and approval.

-- In certain situations, the Commission may offer the potential FLTA applicant the option of submitting paper applications. However, arrangements will be made to have any paper applications entered into the online management system once an applicant who submitted a paper application is nominated by the Fulbright Commission.

■ Application Package:
-- A complete application package includes the on-line application, academic transcripts, letters of reference, and TOEFL or IELTS score report, which should be submitted to the Binational Fulbright Commission in Jordan no later than 28 April 2011 for the Academic Year 2012-2013 recruitment cycle.
-- A complete medical history and examination form, in addition to;
-- A valid passport with an expiration date of no earlier than December 31, 2013: the FLTA applicant should make a clear photocopy of his/her Jordanian Passport data page and include this page with the application.
Note: Letters of Reference should not be written by persons related to you either by blood or marriage, or by personal friends. The letters should be written in English if possible, or accompanied by accurate translations.
-- All applications must include an official indicator of English language proficiency or copy of the registration ticket for the TOEFL exam by the application due date.
Incomplete applications cannot be considered.
Note: FLTA Fellows who are not able to secure an entry visa in accordance with their program start date may lose their fellowships. Successful candidates will be notified of their awards by March 2012.
