Donald A. Wehrung International Student Humanitarian Award (ISHA)

Overview

The University of British Columbia, established in 1908, educates a student population of 50,000 on major campuses in two cities and holds an international reputation for excellence in advanced research and learning.

UBC is committed to fostering the richest scholarly communities in its campuses, which as far as possible reflect the diversity of our world.

The Donald A. Wehrung International Student Humanitarian Award (ISHA) recognizes outstanding international students from impoverished or war-torn areas, who have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances and who would be unable to pursue post-secondary education without financial assistance.

The value of awards is commensurate with demonstrated financial need, and sufficient to cover tuition costs for the relevant program of study, and living expenses. An ISHA award can be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study, or to degree completion, whichever is less, provided the recipient achieves satisfactory academic standing in their Faculty, continues to demonstrate financial need, and maintains their Canadian Study Permit (visa).

Am I eligible?

All candidates must be nominated for an ISHA award. To be eligible, nominees must be international students entering university directly from secondary school and eligible to study in Canada on a Canadian study permit. They must also demonstrate superior academic achievement ('A' average or equivalent standing) and meet UBC’s other competitive admission requirements.

How can I be nominated?

If you’re interested in this award, ask your counsellor to request a nomination package. Recognised international, community-based, and non-governmental organizations may also be able to make nominations. Requests for nomination packages should be made by email to international.counsellors@ubc.ca. Nomination packages cannot be sent directly to students.

What is the deadline?

The deadline for nomination packages to be received at UBC is January 31, 2011.

Nominees must also complete the online Application for academic admission to UBC, and meet the UBC English Language Admission Requirement by the same date, January 31, 2011. Early Application is encouraged, however, to ensure that an Application decision can be made in time for Nomination consideration.

If the first* choice program is the Bachelor of Commerce, nominees are also required to complete the online BCom Supplemental Application.
