Postdoctoral Fellowships 2011 at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Overview

The College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites applications for up to 12 postdoctoral fellowships for the Academic Year 2011.

The College comprises 3 Schools: Humanities and Social Sciences; Art, Design, and Media; and Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.

This year, up to 9 fellowships will be available at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in the following areas:

1. Economics - Environment and Climate Change
Research on the relationships among the environment, health and climate change in general and more specifically repercussions of climate change on the environment and health.

2. Psychology - Mental Health in the Context of Asia
Investigation of the bio-psycho-social factors that affect mental wellness and that have implications for treatment.
Supervisors: A/P Annabel Chen, Asst/P Joyce Pang

3. Psychology - Cognitive Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology
Study of one or more of the following: primate behaviour in natural environments, motivated behaviour using animal models, neural/behavioural mechanisms underlying human visual perception and memory.
Supervisors: Prof Anthony Hayes, A/P Annabel Chen, A/P Douglas Matthews, Asst/P Michael Patterson, Asst/P Michael Gumert


4. Economics / Psychology - Social Aspects of a Changing Population
Research on social demography, public healthcare and heathcare delivery, with reference to class, gender and age cohorts, and with an emphasis on Singapore and the region.

5. Linguistics and Multilingual Studies - Language, Culture and Cognition
The study of the neuro-cognitive basis of speech and language processing, using behavioral, Event-related Potential, and functional and structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging methods.
Supervisor: Asst/P Alice Chan

6. Linguistics and Multilingual Studies - Child Language Development
Research into the interface between grammatical structure and conversational structure, using naturally occurring data.
Supervisor: Prof Luke Kang Kwong

7. English - Asian Literature and Culture
Including South Asian, SE Asian and East Asian literature in translation, and contemporary theoretical approaches to Asian culture and literature.

8. History - History of Science, Technology, Medicine and Business
Cross-disciplinary research on the history of science, technology, and medicine, and/or business history, particularly in the context of modern and contemporary Asia.
Supervisor: Prof Liu Hong

9. Philosophy - Chinese Philosophy
Research on Chinese philosophy and intellectual history through comparative approach, with emphasis on its contemporary relevance.

Successful applicants will be attached to a relevant academic division within the School. The proposed supervisors for the themes above are subject to change. Depending on the research proposals from successful candidates, Divisions will determine the most suitable supervisor.

Up to 3 fellowships will be available at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information in the following areas:

1. Communication Research - Virtual Humans/ Human Factors
Examine the socio-psychological effects of virtual human interactions on individual attitudes and behavior such as feeling of presence, character identification, and social stereotypes. In particular, we plan to conduct experimental research on human-robot interaction, mobile media, and human factors design in the possible context of nursing social robots to aid the elderly or agent-based learning games.

2. Communication Research - Archives and Heritage
Understand the impact of the Internet on the taxonomy and organization of collective memories of nation-states; examine the relationships between power and memory of nations in cyberspace, the contest or negotiation of geographical, social, and political boundaries using the Internet to create memories, and case studies of memory initiatives by nation-states, civil societies, and individual citizens.

3. Public and Promotional Communication - ICT for Developing Countries
Investigate the adoption and impact of mobile internet within a developmental context, focusing on South and SE Asia.

Postdoctoral fellowships are for one year, renewable for a second year, subject to satisfactory performance. Postdoctoral fellows may be required to assist in teaching, up to the equivalent of one semester-based course per academic year.
