L’Oreal-UNESCO Pan Arab Regional Fellowships for Women in Science

Overview

In 1998, UNESCO and L'Oréal joined forces to promote women in science by creating the For Women in Science partnership. This unique partnership developed an ambitious program of awards and fellowships to highlight examples of scientific excellence and encourage young women to choose scientific careers.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO Pan-Arab Fellowships ‘For Women in Science’ were launched last year, in partnership with the Arab Science and Technology Foundation (ASTF), to empower Arab women scientists and celebrate their contributions to the world of science.

Following the incredible success of the 2010 program, the 2011 Pan-Arab Fellowships ‘For Women in Science’ program has been extended to offer 10 fellowships to exceptional Arab women scientists. Each new fellow will receive $20,000US to encourage them to pursue their scientific vocation.

About the Fellowships

1. Up to 10 annual fellowships are awarded to women scientists in Arab countries, to realize important scientific research in life sciences, applied sciences and physical sciences, the research is to be conducted in Arab region.
2. Each fellowship is worth $ 20 000 to be paid directly by L’Oreal Foundation, and to used for research in Arab countries.
3. The Fellowships will be attributed to women scientists having obtained a Masters degree.
4. The selected beneficiaries will be awarded their Fellowships at a public ceremony.


Eligible Candidates

Ten Fellowships are worth up to $20,000 each, will be awarded to candidates applying from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen


INSTRUCTIONS:

The application form should be submitted by the applicant and each part should be filled completely and accurately in English. The application should be submitted online and all recommendation letters should submitted hardcopy by mail. The information requested should be either typed or written in block capitals. Where additional space is needed, a separate sheet should be used.

The following information and documents must be included in the application:

- application form
- curriculum vitae, mentioning the applicants most important scientific publications.
- certified copies of degrees or diplomas.
- detailed description, one or two pages (maximum) 1000 words of the research proposal for the forthcoming year (year after the allowance of the fellowship)
- scientific supervisor’s recommendation or recommendation of the head of the scientific institution where the project will be realized (send hard copy by mail)
- list of scientific publications
- copies of significant publications (enclose copies of the scientific publications if possible)

Selection Criteria:

- Doctorate or Post-doctorate level
- Applicants aged under 40 years old
- Country residents
- Disciplines: Life Sciences, Material Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering.
- Recommendations from academic and/or research supervisors
- Academic excellence, with high potential for their research
