Overview
The University of Birmingham, in partnership with the US Alumni Foundation is delighted to announce the launch of a Joint scholarship scheme for 2011 entry. Scholarships each worth up to £15,000 will be awarded to two exceptional candidates from the USA.
Eligible applicants must be applying for a one year masters degree programme (taught or research) commencing in Autumn 2011. Applicants must also be both nationals of and currently domiciled in the USA. Scholarships will be awarded on merit and applicants must apply by 27 May 2011.
Who we are looking for
You should have an excellent academic background attaining the equivalent of a good 2i equivalent bachelors degree as a minimum. You should also demonstrate excellence in an area of your life. This might be outstanding academic achievement, exceptional achievement in extra curricular activities (such as sport, music, managing events or societies) or significant achievement gained either in your working life or through volunteering and service to others.
As part of the application process, you must also outline the contribution you will make to the University of Birmingham as a student and what you expect to gain from studying here.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible for consideration, candidates must:
-Have applied for a place to study on a one years masters degree programme (taught or research) in any subject commencing in the autumn term of 2011 and have been issued with a student ID application number.
-Be a national of and domiciled in the USA
-Be classified as overseas for fee purposes
-Have made adequate financial provision to study in the UK
-Applicants must not be in receipt of a full tuition fee from any other source
Making an application
- the scholarship scheme will open for applications in January 2011. Further details and an application form will be available from here once the scheme has launched
- applicants must submit a scholarships application form by the deadline of Friday 27 May 2011
- applicants must ensure that all supporting documents including references and transcripts are received by the University no later than Friday 27 May 2011

Terms and Conditions
- awards are offered for autumn 2011 entry and cannot be deferred
- scholarship awards will be deducted from the tuition fees payable to the University
in the event that the tuition fees are more than the scholarship award, it is the responsibility of the scholar to fund any outstanding amount
- by submitting an application, candidates agree to their name being published as
a scholarship winner and undertaking promotional activity
- scholarships will be awarded on merit by a selection panel on the basis of the information provided on the Scholarship Application form and supporting documents
- the scholarship panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into after the closing date
- successful candidates will be informed in writing by mid-July 2011
