University of Leicester Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme

Overview

Awards made under this scheme are jointly funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), as part of the United Kingdom International Development programme for developing countries, and participating institutions in the UK.

Awards are for full-time one-year taught masters courses in the following areas only:


Sustainable Management of Natural Resources MSc
Environmental Informatics (Geographical Information Systems with Sustainable Management of Natural Resources) MSc
Global Environmental Change MSc
Banking & Finance MSc
Economics MSc
Money & Banking MSc
Public Sector Economics MSc
International Education MA
Human Rights LLM
Infection and Immunity MSc
International Relations & World Order MA
International Security Studies MA

Eligible Candidates

Candidates are normally expected to hold a first degree at either first class or upper second-class level. Candidates are expected to be under 30 years of age and be fluent in written and oral English. Candidates who have already studied for one year or more in a developed country or who possess sufficient resources to self-fund, are not eligible for an award.


Candidates must certify in writing that they

i) are nationals of a Commonwealth developing country, and not at present living or studying in a developed country;
ii) have not undertaken studies lasting one year or more in a developed country;
iii) are not at present employed by a national Government department or parastatal organisation;
iv) are themselves, or through their families, unable to pay to study in the United Kingdom;
v) will return to their home country as soon as their award comes to an end. The commission will only consider requests to extend leave to remain in the UK post-award for those wishing to move from masters to PhD study. Strict conditions will apply.

Scholarship

DFID and participating United Kingdom institutions will jointly meet the full costs of an award holder’s study in the United Kingdom including air fares to and from the United Kingdom. Maintenance allowance is paid by the scholar’s host institution, at the level set by the UK Government: £1,044 per month for scholars based in London and £844 per month for the rest of the UK. (July 2010 figures)

A grant of up to £225 to cover thesis (Master’s) costs is available; also available is £200 for study travel. The cost of up to 10 Kilograms of excess baggage (books only) is available for scholars returning home at the end of their awards.

Application Requirements

Ensure that you have included all of the following documents along with your completed application form:

i. Copies of your transcript(s) from your previous programmes of study (school leaving qualifications and any university-level programmes if applicable). This should be in English.
ii. A personal statement (typed if possible) of a maximum of 500 words, detailing:
1. academic performance
2. the ranking of any University that you have attended
3. your personal ranking compared with other students in your class
4. how the proposed study will benefit your home country, and how the skills and qualification will be applied on your return
5. brief details of the skills you expect to gain from this award and of your professional plans when you return on completion of your award.
iii. A copy of your offer letter from the Postgraduate Admissions Office.

Applications must be received by 10 May 2011. Any applications received after this date will not be considered.
