PhD Scholarship in Management in collaboration with the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH)

Overview

The University of Exeter Business School is teaming up with the newly formed European Centre for Environment and Human Health (www.ecehh.org) to offer 3 exciting fully funded PhD opportunities in the area of innovation, environment and health to start in 2011. A second call for studentships will be made in the early Summer. This research will be complementary to the One Planet MBA offered by the Business School. This is an opportunity to undertake focussed research that explores how business innovation can promote sustainability, health and wellbeing in a way that is compatible with and has foundations in the concept of One Planet living. These studentships aim to constructively shape future business practice and open up business opportunities in a way that is progressive, in some cases even revolutionary. This is the time to think outside the box, to take a leading role in defining future business innovation for a sustainable and healthy society. Interested? The following topic area is a suggestion for research, but students who have novel research questions that they would like to explore further are encouraged to bring these forward for consideration: be creative! All studentships will be located in Exeter but will have a unique opportunity to enjoy interaction with staff both at the European Centre for Environment and Health and the Business School.

The Wider Impacts of Disruptive Innovation: Roles, Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Supervisors: Prof Richard Owen (Chair Innovation, Environment and Health), Prof Jonathan Gosling (Director, Centre for Leadership Studies).

Who is responsible for the wider, often unanticipated impacts of potentially disruptive innovation on society, health and the environment? Emerging technologies such as synthetic biology, nanotechnology, geoengineering, information technology and communications will shape how we live in decades to come. But these can have far reaching consequences and impacts on society, some of which can be profound and global in nature. Should scientists and innovators in academic and private institutions be responsible for the wider implications of their innovation and creativity? Or should this be the responsibility of those who fund or manage them, such as research councils, Universities or industry? Should they be held accountable for future unintended and unanticipated impacts? What are the limits and boundaries of responsibility and accountability? What are the legal and regulatory positions? Who should exhibit leadership in this context and what does the concept of responsible leadership entail? What does the landscape of responsibility look like and how do the various actors see their roles in this regard? What can we learn to provide a future approach that supports more responsible emergence of new
technologies and disruptive innovations in democratic society?

This PhD will map the responsibility landscape in several emerging areas of technological innovation, and take a case study approach to answer these questions. It will involve short periods of action research within the research councils, Government and industry.
