Heidelberg University Postdoctoral position in experimental atomic physics

Overview

A postdoctoral position is immediately available for an excellent experimental atomic physicist, who has a strong interest in doing research in the field of Highly Charged Ions (HCI) and Relativistic Atomic Collisions.

Our group, based in Physics Institute of Heidelberg University, studies fundamental atomic electromagnetic interactions in the domain of strong fields of heavy HCI and hard x-rays. Our experimental program is accomplished at the external facilities. The GSI/Darmstadt Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) and the newly developed Stockholm Electron Beam Ion Trap (S-EBIT) will be used for production and experiments with the heaviest HCI up to bare uranium, i.e. up to the limits of the atomic matter. Experiments at the electron accelerator S-DALINAC of Technische Universität Darmstadt will complement these studies. To enable these investigations we develop novel hard x-ray polarimeters based on modern position-sensitive semiconductor detectors.

The successful candidate will assume an active role in the experiments at ERS, S-DALINAC and SEBIT. In addition he/she will take part in the developments of hard x-ray polarimeters, in particular the advanced detector readout and analysis techniques “Pulse Shape Analysis” and “Gamma-ray tracking”. The work will be performed in a close collaboration with international experimental and theoretical atomic physics groups.

The successful candidate should have a PhD in experimental atomic physics and a research background in at least one of the following areas: atomic physics with highly charged ions at ion sources/accelerators, storage rings or electron beam ion traps; hard x-ray spectroscopy; segmented hard x-ray and gamma-ray semiconductor detectors. Experience with vacuum equipment, electronics (NIM, VME) and computer programming (C++, LabView) is generally required. The duration of the employment is one year with a possibility of another year extension. Salary level and social benefits will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the German Civil Service (TV-L/E13).

Review of applications will start on 7.03.2011 and will continue until the position is filled. Please send your application with CV, list of publications and names and e-mails of 3 scientists who might be contacted for the letter of reference by e-mail or mail to:
