Overview
The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias; IAC (Tenerife, Spain), invites applicants for TWO postdoctoral contracts within the framework of the external project entitled: "Solar Magnetism and Astrophysical Spectropolarimetry" (AYA2010-18029), financed by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and whose responsible scientist is Prof. Javier Trujillo Bueno.
The appointed candidate will benefit from the research environment at the IAC, which hosts one of the largest and most active Solar Physics groups in Europe. The group covers theory (polarized radiative transfer and MHD), observation and instrumental development. In addition, the IAC coordinates the design phase of the "European Solar Telescope" (which involves the joint effort of several European countries) and the “Solar Atmospheric and Interplanetary Research (SOLAIRE) Network” (whose explicit aim is to foster research collaboration among its participant institutions).
The selected postdoc will also benefit from scientific exchange with the other research groups of the IAC, whose interests include cosmology, galaxies, the interstellar medium, stellar physics, exoplanets, telescope design and space projects. Further information about the IAC's research programme, its observatories and the 10.4 m GTC telescope is available on the IAC's Web page (http://www.iac.es/).
Duties: The selected candidate will carry out his/her research in the following fields:
The generation and transfer of polarized radiation, with emphasis on the Hanle and Zeeman effects in chromospheric spectral lines;
Development and application of plasma diagnostic tools for the determination of chromospheric and coronal magnetic fields.
Qualifications, knowledge and skills: Preference will be given to candidates with experience on the following topics:
Numerical modeling of non-LTE radiative transfer in realistic models of stellar atmospheres, including the physical mechanisms that produce polarization in spectral lines (atomic level polarization and the Hanle and Zeeman effects);
The quantum theory of spectral line polarization and its application to explore the magnetic sensitivity of chromospheric and coronal lines.
Requirements: Applicants must be in possession of a PhD degree in Astrophysics or Physics at the time of appointment (the date of defense of the doctoral thesis must be after 1st January 2006).
NOTE: Applicants who defended their thesis at the IAC must present written evidence of having spent one continuous year, or 18 accumulated months, in other research institutes.
Remuneration: The gross annual salary is 32,886 €, subject to up to 20% tax and Social Security deductions. Medical insurance under the Spanish National Health Service will be provided, and will also cover your accompanying partner and children (if relevant).
Relocation grant: In the present call for applications we include a re-location grant for the successful candidate in which the following items are included: a flight ticket (booked and issued by the IAC), lodging for up to two weeks (organised by the IAC) and per diem for up to two weeks. This grant will be limited to a ceiling value of 2.000 €.
Duration: There are two positions, of 12 months and 6 months of duration. Both contracts will start during the first semester 2011.
Non-UE citizens: If you are citizen of a country not belonging to the European Union, you will sign a provisional contract with the IAC which will not get into force until you obtain the compulsory documentation required to live and work in Spain (NIE card). Please contact the Spanish consulate in your country for details in regard to your VISA.
Compulsory documentation to submit:
-The Application Form: WORD or PDF ;
-Curriculum Vitae, bibliography, brief statement of research interests, and a covering letter telling us about the skills you can bring to the job;
-A photocopy of your PhD Degree or certificate;
-At least two letters of recommendation must be sent (electronic submission preferred); directly by researchers or professionals familiar with your work, to the Secretariat of the IAC's Research Division: secinv@iac.es
Applications must be sent, electronic submission preferred, to the Secretariat of the Research Division, secinv@iac.es. Applications may also be sent by post, however, applications received after the deadline cannot be accepted, unless they are post-stamped, on the application form, by the postal office, before the deadline. Please note that the stamp on the envelope is not valid. Postal address: Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, C/ Via Láctea s/n, E-38205 La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain.
For any scientific additional information, please contact the PI of the project; Prof. Javier Trujillo Bueno (jtb@iac.es)..
