Teaching and Research Training Scholarships at University of Leeds

Overview

The School of Sociology and Social Policy will be offering up to two Scholarships to candidates from the United Kingdom or other European Union countries to commence full-time study in September 2011. The School invites applications from suitably qualified graduates (first or good upper second) and current undergraduates who expect to attain a good degree, who wish to undertake postgraduate research for three (PhD) or four years (MA + PhD). The bursaries will cover full fees and a basic maintenance grant plus payment for teaching duties equivalent in total to the ESRC maintenance grant (£13,590 for 2010/11).

The successful candidates will, after appropriate training, be able to provide teaching support, mark both formative and assessed essays and mark level one exam work. The total maximum time spent on teaching and related duties will be 4-6 hours per week.

Candidates who do not hold (or expect to hold shortly) an MA must submit an application for the MA Social Research programme and an application for Research Degree entry for the following year (as per ESRC 1+3), and will be expected to undertake training courses and workshops that will equip them with the appropriate teaching skills for subsequent years in addition to the MA (RT) modules. Upon successful completion of the MA students will usually be transferred to (Prov) PhD. It is expected that candidates applying for the PhD award would normally have (or be completing) an RT recognised MA and that they undertake appropriate training courses for teaching.

To apply:

Candidates should normally submit a CV, including details of any relevant teaching experience, and a brief statement supporting their case, normally one side of A4 to:
Debbie Westmoreland, Postgraduate Co-ordinator, School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT.

The deadline for applications is 23rd May 2011.

Short listed candidates will be invited for interviews which will be held on 6 June 2011. Invites for interview will be sent by email, please ensure that you provide us with a current email address or if this is not possible indicate a telephone number where you can be contacted.

Shortlisted candidates will be prepared to give a 10 minute presentation to the interview panel of a seminar plan to teach level one students on any subject in sociology/social policy. The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate your ability to present your learning and teaching material in an interesting and engaging way. You should consider the resources you will use and the methods you will apply when teaching this seminar.
