Open Society Foundations

The Academic Fellowship Program (AFP) announces the 2011 competition
for the International Scholars Fellowship. The program invites highly qualified scholars in the social sciences and humanities to consult at carefully selected university departments in the AFP region: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.

Fellowships include a modest stipend, transportation, accommodation, and various other allowances, begin in August or September 2011, last one academic year, and are renewable. Those selected for the fellowship, or "International Scholars," offer advice on the overall reform agenda of AFP partner departments and share with departmental colleagues the latest developments in their discipline, collaborate on the introduction of new courses, and encourage the development of skills critical to academic work.

Eligibility

- A PhD (or highest degree customarily awarded) in: anthropology, area/cultural studies, economics, gender studies, history, human rights & public law, international relations, journalism/media studies, philosophy, political science, psychology, public policy/public health, public policy/environmental studies, social work and sociology. Applicants must be senior or well-established academics currently employed by an institution of higher education.

Recent degree recipients will not be considered.

- Extensive experience in research and scholarly teaching. The successful candidate will show proficiency in innovative teaching methodologies specific for the discipline, and a strong commitment to high-quality teaching.
- Willingness to participate in the peer review of teaching materials and scholarly interaction available through the Webfolio Project
(www.academicwebfolio.org).
- Ability to evaluate departmental needs and determine how the department could most benefit from their expertise. Before final placement, AFP and the partner department work with the International Scholar to design a work plan that is both rewarding and feasible for the fellow and of greatest help to the department.

Application deadline: April 11, 2011.
